TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior
Carly McEachran provided the offense and freshman
Karyn Wright provided the pitching as the Vikings bounced back with a 2-1 over the Boise State Broncos Friday morning at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
McEachran hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give the Vikings the early one-run lead. Her home run was hit in nearly the same spot as the one she blasted against San Jose State in the season opener.
Portland State (1-1 overall) gave Wright the ball in her first career start and she did not disappoint. Wright threw a complete game allowing only one earned run on six hits while giving up a lone walk and striking out four Broncos.
Wright got through the first two batters with relative ease before giving up a triple to right field. She then induced a fly ball out to left field to end the inning and get out of the jam.
The Vikings struggled to get anything going in the second or third innings with five of their next six batters striking out.
Boise State (0-1) led off the top of the third with a single up the middle. The runner was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Wright induced a foul fly ball out to
Crysta Conn at third base for the second out. The Broncos got on the board with another base hit up the middle scoring the runner from second.
After neither team did anything in the fourth inning, freshman catcher
Lauran Bliss hit a double down the left field line for just the second hit for the Vikings in the game. Bliss would be stranded at second however after the next two batters recorded outs.
McEachran blasted her second home run of the game, third in the last two games, with another solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth giving the Vikings a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos had runners at the corners and two outs when Wright provided the play of the day. With the tying run at third and the go-ahead run for the Broncos at first, Wright struck out pinch hitter Sarah Barnes ending the inning and the threat.
Wright then set down the Broncos in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and pick up her first career win as a Viking.
Lela Work pitched a complete game in the loss for the Broncos giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out eight.
McEachran has hit a home run for her first three hits of the season and has hit a homer in three of her last four games dating back to 2012.
The Vikings return to action at the Kajikawa Classic Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. PST/2:30 MT when they take on the Stanford Cardinal.
