HENDERSON, Nev. – One big inning did in the Vikings Saturday night as they fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack 9-1 in five innings Saturday night at the Easton Desert Classic hosted by UNLV.
Portland State (4-6 overall) struck first in the top of the third inning with a manufactured run.
Alexa Morales singled through the right side and was moved to second on a single by
Brittany Hendrickson.
Brianna Celaya moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt.
Carly McEachran then drove in her sixth run of the season with a sacrifice fly to right field giving Portland State a 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last long as the Wolf Pack (4-5) plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Portland State had two runners in scoring position and one out in the top of the fourth but a pop up to second and a swinging strikeout ended the Vikings threat.
Nevada scored another run off Vikings' starter
Karyn Wright before she was pulled for
Melissa Masters. Wright was able to only get one out in the fourth and left the game with a runner on second.
Masters gave up a single, scoring the runner from second and closing the book on Wright.
Wright threw 3 1/3 innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits. She did not walk a batter nor did she record a strikeout.
Nevada scored five more runs off Masters in the bottom of the fourth including a two-out grand slam to center field by the Wolf Pack's center fielder Sara Parsons.
The Vikings went in order in the top of the fifth to end the game and drop to 4-6 on the season and 2-2 at the Easton Desert Classic.
Karlyn Jones threw a complete game for Nevada giving up one earned run on three hits. She struck out five Vikings while walking just one. She improves to 2-2 on the season
Portland State will play one more game at the classic when it squares off with No. 9 California Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
