TEMPE, Ariz. – The Portland State softball team fell to the Indiana Hoosiers 7-0 Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Vikings scattered six hits over the seven inning game and stranded seven runners on base.
Indiana took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the second. The Hoosiers plated three runs in the top of the third and three more in the top of the fourth to take the 7-0 lead.
Portland State got someone on base in each of the first four innings but could not advance them past second base.
Freshman
Karyn Wright started the game in the circle for the Vikings and pitched just 2 1/3 innings giving up four earned runs on six hits. She struck out just one batter before being lifted. Fellow freshman
Melissa Masters relieved Wright making her first career Portland State pitching appearance.
Masters finished the game throwing 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking three.
Portland State had its best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning but a double play and a foul fly ball out to third ending the game.
Lora Olson pitched the complete game shutout allowing six hits while walking one and striking out two Viking batters. She improved to 1-1 with the win. Wright earned the loss and dropped to 1-1 on the season.
The Vikings will be back in action next weekend at the Easton Desert Classic hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. They open the Blah with Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Feb. 15.
