Pilots Pull Away Late, Win 76-49

– The Portland State women's basketball team fell to cross-town rival University of Portland, 76-49, Saturday afternoon at the Peter W. Stott Center in the Vikings' final non-conference game of the season. 

Lariel Powell led the Vikings with 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor. She went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line and hit the team's only three-pointer of the game. Powell scored the Vikings final basket of the game as they went scoreless over the final 6:32.

Portland State (2-7 overall) trailed Portland (7-4) by just a single point at 49-48 before the Pilots went on a 7-1 run to go up 56-49. Portland then scored the final 20 points of the contest.

The game stayed within two scores through the first 10 minutes of the game before the Pilots built up a nine-point lead with just over seven minutes left in the half. The Vikings cut the lead to four, but the Pilots took a seven-point lead, 31-24, into the break.

Mikaela Rivard led the way for the Vikings in the first half with seven points on 2-for-4 shooting coming off the bench. She went 3-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Vikings started the second half on an 8-0 run to take the lead at 32-31. Portland's Amy Pupa hit a three-pointer from the corner to retake the lead at 34-32.

The three-pointer started a 7-0 run for the Pilots increasing their lead to 38-32. Powell scored the next four points for the Vikings with a three-pointer and a free throw to cut the lead to two points at 39-37.

Powell brought the Vikings within one, at 49-48, with her 11th point of the ballgame with 6:32 left in the second. Unfortunately that would turn out to be the final basket for the Vikings as they went scoreless the rest of the way. Portland scored the final 20 points of the game to take the game 76-49.

The Vikings begin Big Sky Conference play Sunday, Dec. 29 by heading to Cheney, Wash. to take on the Eastern Washington Eagles in the first of two Dam Cup rivalry games. Tip is slated for 2:00 p.m.
