RECENT GAME - Portland State 72, George Fox 62
PORTLAND – Returners and newcomers alike were on display as the Portland State women's basketball team defeated George Fox University by a score of 72-62 Friday night at the Peter W. Stott Center. It was the final exhibition game for the Vikings who open up their regular season slate Sunday against Saint Mary's.
   Senior forward
Allie Brock led the Vikings with a game-high 21 points. She added 12 rebounds for a double-double while shooting .500 from the floor. She went 5-for-10 while doing nearly half of her damage from the charity stripe going a perfect 10-for-10. Brock also hit one of the Vikings' three three-pointers in the game.
"This was a Sacramento State type of team," Head Coach
Sherri Murrell said following the game. "They want to pressure you the whole game. We settled down and ran our stuff in the second half which showed a lot of poise.
Kate Lanz did a good job on getting rebounds and attacking the basket. It's the reason why we scheduled these teams, because this is what we're going to see during the season. We've done this without a couple of post players so we'll see what happens when they come back."
   Senior guard
Kate Lanz added 16 points and eight boards in 36 minutes. She added a game-high five assists. Freshman
Delanie Parry was the only other Viking in double-digit points with 10. She went 5-for-8 from the line and 2-for-6 from the floor including a three-pointer late in the game.
Portland State out-rebounded George Fox 44-to-38. The Vikings had 25 offensive rebounds helping them to outscore the Bruins 22-to-6 in second chance points.
Sophomore
Emily Easom hit a three-pointer right off the bat to give the Vikings an early 3-0 lead. PSU went up four at 6-2 before GFU scored four straight to tie it at 6-6. Neither team could build up more than a one-possession lead before the Bruins went up four by free throws from Megan Hays. Hays then hit a jumper to put the Bruins up six with 7:46 left in the first half.
George fox went up by as much as eight points with 3:50 left in the first before the Vikings went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 29-29. Lanz had a couple of buckets in the run before Parry tied it with a jumper. George Fox took the lead again and had a one-point advantage at 33-32 going into the break.
Lanz scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half going 6-for-8 from the floor. She also had four rebounds. Easom was the other top scorer for the Vikings with seven in the first half. She finished the game with nine points.
Like Easom in the first half, Brock hit a three-pointer in the first minute of the second half to give the Vikings a two-point lead at 35-33. After the Bruins briefly tied the game at 35-25, the Vikings went on a 9-3 run to go up 44-38 on a Brock layup with Lanz assisting on the play.
George Fox would not go away and tied the game at 44-44. The Bruins held a one-point advantage at 48-47 but that would be the last time they held the lead. Lanz hit a jumper to put the Vikings up 49-48 before Brock pushed the lead to three. Parry hit a pair of free throws to put the Vikings up five at 53-48 with 11:48 left to play.
The Bruins came within one at 53-52 but the Vikings went on a 6-0 run over the next four minutes to go up 59-52 on a
Keaton McFadden jumper in the paint. George Fox hung in there but Portland State continued to extend its lead with a three-pointer from Parry and some late free throws. The Vikings closed it out and took the win by a final score of 72-62.
After pulling down eight offensive boards in the first half, the Vikings pulled down 17 in the second, which led to 12 second half second chance points.
The Vikings did not play either
Angela Misa or
Mikaela Rivard in the game Friday night. Misa is returning from a season-ending knee injury a year ago and Rivard is nursing an injury of her own.
