EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State softball team's season came to an end Friday night as the Vikings fell to Brigham Young by a score of 2-0 at Howe Field in Eugene, Ore. in a NCAA Regional elimination game.
The Vikings (28-25 overall) got three runners on in the top of the first inning but could not push a run across and stranded two heading to the bottom of the inning.
BYU (45-14) led off the bottom of the first with a double off Vikings'
Anna Bertrand. The next hitter reached on an infield single deep in the hole at second moving the runner to third. After Bertrand recorded a strikout, she then induced a popup in foul territory to
Kayla Norrie behind the plate. The next batter singled, driving in the runner from third giving BYU a 1-0 lead.
With runners on the corners for BYU in the bottom of the first, the runner at first attempted to steal second. Norrie's threw down to
Carly McEachran who cut the ball off and threw the runner out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
Neither team could really get anything going over the next three innings as BYU took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning.
Jenna Krogh reached with two outs in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice bunt and then stole second getting into scoring position but was stranded to end the inning.
BYU picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 2-0. The Vikings could only get one base runner over the final two innings and fell 2-0.
Bertrand dropped to 23-13 on the season with the loss. She threw the complete game, her 26th of the year, allowing just the two earned runs on five hits. She walked two and struck out four. Her four strikouts gives her 229 on the seeason which is the second most for a single-season in Portland State history. BYU's starting pitcher Tori Almond improved to 20-3 with the win.
