Vikings Get Series Sweep on Senior Day

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore.
– Senior outfielder Jenna Krogh went 3-for-8 on the day with three runs scored as the Vikings finished off the series sweep over Weber State on senior day at Erv Lind Stadium. Maggie Sholian added two hits while Karmen Holladay drove in two runs in their final home games at Portland State.

The Vikings took the first game of the day by a score of 6-1 and then took the second game 4-2 to pick up their fourth Pacific Coast Softball Conference series victory.  The Vikings have won their last six conference games and have won seven of their past eight. The Vikings secured the PCSC Mountain Division title with a doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats on Saturday and would wait patiently to find out whom they would face in the conference championship series.

The answer would come when Saint Mary's swept their Sunday doubleheader with Loyola Marymount to secure the Coastal Division title. The Vikings and Gaels will face off in a rematch of the inaugural PCSC championship series that the Gaels took in 2010.

Game 1 – Portland State 6, Weber State 1

The Vikings (23-21 overall, 15-5 PCSC), playing as the visiting team for the doubleheader, picked up one run in the top of the third after going in order through the first two innings. Sholian got the first hit of the game for the Vikings with a leadoff single to left field.

After the next two hitters recorded outs, Krogh poked a single to left moving Sholian to second. A Carly McEachran walk loaded the bases before Holladay walked driving in Scholian from third giving the Vikings the early 1-0 lead.

Freshman Alicia Fine then doubled over the left fielder's head driving in McEachran and Krogh increasing the Vikings' lead to 3-0 going to the bottom of the third.

Freshman pitcher Raya Johnson started the game in the circle for the Vikings and stranded five Wildcats runners on base through the first four innings.

Alexa Morales doubled to start the fourth and was then driven in on Sholian's second hit of the game giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead. Sholian went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI in game one for her first multi-hit game of her Portland State career.

The Vikings added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Holladay and a RBI groundout by pinch hitter Aubrey Nitschelm giving the Vikings their largest lead of the series at 6-0.

The Wildcats plated their first run of the weekend in the bottom of the fifth after Johnson got herself into trouble. She got the leadoff hitter to groundout to first for the first out of the inning before walking the next batter. A hit to right field put runners on first and second before a hit batter loaded the bases with one out.

Johnson walked the next batter forcing in a run from third bringing the Vikings lead to 6-1. The next batter grounded the ball to Fine at short who went home getting the force-out at the plate for the second out. The next batter lined the ball directly at Johnson in the circle who held on for the final out of the inning.

The Wildcats (21-32, 10-10) stranded a runner in scoring position in each of the final two innings but Johnson pitched her way out of trouble for her seventh complete game of the season. She threw seven complete innings allowing one earned run on just three hits and struck out four to pick up her third win of the season.

Game 2 – Portland State 4, Weber State 2

Krogh led off the game with an infield single to second before swiping two bags making her way to third. After McEachran grounded out, Holladay walked putting runners on the corners for the Vikings with one out. Holladay then stole second trying to induce a throw that would allow Krogh to score from third but no throw was made. With Krogh at third and Holladay at second, Fine came up with her second big hit of the day, this time a single to right field driving in both runners to give the Vikings the early 2-0 lead.

The Vikings would look to add more runs in the inning after loading the bases with two outs when Sadie Lopez lined out sharply to third to end the inning.

Johnson got the call again in the circle for the Vikings and allowed one unearned run in the bottom of the first bringing the Vikings lead to 2-1 through one complete inning.

Becca Bliss singled up the middle to start the second for the Vikings but was forced out at second when Krogh grounded the ball back to the pitcher. With a runner on first and one out, McEachran blasted her third home run of the season to left field increasing the Vikings lead to 4-1.

The Wildcats stranded a runner on third in the second inning and again in the third but Johnson got out of trouble in both. She gave up a run in the fourth but that was it as the Wildcats narrowed the Vikings lead to 4-2 through four innings.

Junior Anna Bertrand came in relief of Johnson in the fifth and threw the final three innings of the game allowing just one hit to close out the game and earn her second save of the season. Johnson picked up her fourth victory of the season improving to 4-9 overall and 3-1 in PCSC play.

The Vikings will have nearly two weeks off before they take on the Gaels of Saint Mary's in the PCSC Championship Series, May 11-12 in Moraga, Calif. The winner of the three-game series will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

NOTES: Raya Johnson improved to 3-1 in PCSC games this season with the two wins Sunday … Anna Bertrand's save is the sixth of her career and the all-time record for Portland State … All three seniors reached base safely in the third inning of game one … Alicia Fine went 3-for-7 (.429) with two doubles and four RBIs on the day … Jenna Krogh stole three bases on the day and is 13-for-13 on the season … Krogh has 22 career steals which is tied for fifth all-time during the Division I era at Portland State.
