PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior pitcher
Anna Bertrand threw two complete game shutouts against the Redhawks of Seattle University Sunday on a beautiful day for softball at Erv Lind Stadium.
It is the first time in her career at Portland State that Bertrand has thrown back-to-back complete game shutouts on the same day. Not only did she throw every inning Sunday, she threw every inning on the weekend.
Bertrand ended the weekend with a 3-1 record having thrown all 31 inning and allowing just three earned runs giving her an earned run average of 0.68 on the weekend. She allowed just 18 hits and walked just nine over the four games while striking out 26. Seattle (15-24 overall, 8-9 Pacific Coast Softball Conference) hit just .170 on the weekend.
Out of the 18 hits that she allowed on the weekend, only one went for extra bases, that being a double in the bottom of the sixth inning in the final game of the weekend.
After struggling at the plate in the final game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Vikings' hitters came up with timely hits and scored enough runs to give Bertand the support she needed.
Jenna Krogh went 9-for-15 (.563) on the weekend including a stretch of five consecutive hits spanning all four at bats in game one Sunday and her first at bat in game two. She also scored three of the teams 10 runs on the weekend and stole a base.
Alicia Fine went 5-for-12 on the weekend with a home run and two RBIs while
Karmen Holladay went deep twice, once Saturday and then again in the final game of the series on Sunday, to give her a team-best 10 home runs on the season.
The Vikings (21-21, 11.5) now find themselves a full game up on Weber State (21-26, 10-6) in the PCSC Mountain Division standings heading into the teams' four-game set next weekend.
Game 1 – Portland State 3, Seattle University 0
The Vikings, playing as the visiting team for Sunday's doubleheader per PCSC rules, got back-to-back hits from
Jenna Krogh and
Carly McEachran to start the first. After two consecutive outs, a walk would load the bases but that's the way the Vikings would leave it heading to the bottom of the inning.
Seattle stranded a runner at second after a single and a sacrifice bunt to start the inning. Bertrand induced a fly ball to right for the second out and the got a called third-strike to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the second for the Vikings,
Becca Bliss reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman but was then put out at second on a fielder's choice with
Sadie Lopez reaching first base. Krogh singled to the pitcher on a bunt and then advanced to second when the pitcher threw the ball down the right field line allowing Lopez to go to third on the error.
With two outs and runners at second and third, McEachran doubled to left center driving in Krogh and Lopez for the Vikings' first two runs of the ball game. On the very next pitch, McEachran stole second and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher as she threw the ball into left field with no body covering the third base bag giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead which is all they would need in the game.
With a three-run lead heading to the bottom of the second, Bertrand went to work in the circle. She retired the Redhawks in order recording two strikeouts in the inning. After allowing a base hit with two outs in the bottom of the third, she induced a grounder to short to end the inning.
Seattle made some noise in the fourth when it loaded the bases with one out. A fly ball to right recording the second out of the inning with the ball not being hit deep enough to score the runner from third. The next batter then lined out to
Crysta Conn at third to end the inning.
Bertrand only allowed one base runner over the final three innings to win the game 3-0. She pitched the complete game allowing only four hits while walking one and striking out seven to earn her 17th win of the season.
Krogh went 4-for-4 with four singles in the first game and scored one of the three Viking runs. McEachran went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in.
Game 2 – Portland State 2, Seattle 0
Krogh began the second game of the day the same way she did the first, with a single to make it five consecutive plate appearances with a hit. After McEachran hit an infield fly to the second baseman,
Karmen Holladay hit a double to the opposite field, over the right fielder's head, brining in Krogh all the way from first for the first run of the game.
Seattle led off the bottom of the first with a single. The runner was then moved to second by a sacrifice bunt. A walk put runners at first and second with one out but both were stranded after a groundout to second and a flyout to center ended the inning.
A single and a double play ended the Redhawks chances in the second. They stranded another runner at second following a leadoff hit in the third.
Bertrand worked out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth after a single, a fielder's choice and a fielding error by Conn at third put runners at first and second with one out. The next batter flied out to center on a soft blooper after Krogh made a great catch coming in to make the play. McEachran then ended the inning with a diving catch behind the second base bag for the third out.
After Seattle did nothing in the bottom of the fifth, Holladay led off the top of the sixth for the Vikings with a solo home run to deep left field for her 10th home run of the season which gave Bertrand an all important insurance run.
After leaving two more runners on base in the sixth the Redhawks had the tying runs on base at first and second with one out. The next batter hit a grounder to
Alicia Fine at short who went to Conn at third for the second out. The following batter hit a grounder to Holladay at first to end the game. Seattle stranded nine runners in the game.
Bertrand threw her second complete game shutout of the day allowing six hits and three walks while striking out three for her 18th win of the season.
Krogh went 2-for-4 in the game with a runs scored while Holladay went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a home run. She also drove in both runs in the game for the Vikings.
With the two wins Sunday, the Vikings lead Weber State by a full game in the PCSC Mountain Division standings. Saturday's games will begin at 12 p.m. with Sunday's games starting at 11 p.m., which is a scheduling change.
