Walkoff Homer Sends Broncos Past Vikings, 6-5

Box Score (HTML)

BOISE – Portland State's Alicia Fine hit a game-tying two-run home run in the top of the seventh, but Boise State's Allie Crump answered with a two-out walkoff homer in the bottom half of the inning, sending the host Broncos to a 6-5 victory on Friday afternoon at the SpringHill Suites Invitational.

Boise State (17-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings, as the Vikings struggled early. Portland State committed a pair of errors over those two frames, leading to three unearned runs. The Vikings also got off to a slow start at the plate, as Broncos pitcher Lela Work retired the first 10 batters she faced.

PSU finally got going in the top of the fourth when Becca Bliss laid down a perfectly placed push bunt to the right of the pitchers circle for a one-out base hit. Crysta Conn followed with a single to center, before Karmen Holladay belted her team-leading sixth homer to left field.

The Broncos extended their lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth on Kellie Caplan's RBI-sacrifice fly.

Down to their last turn at-bat, the Vikings rallied to tie it up after Holladay drew a leadoff walk and Fine launched her first career home run to left center.

Boise State sent its top two power hitters to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but PSU pitcher Anna Bertrand struck out both Christina Capobianco and Devon Bridges, who entered with a combined 55 career homers. Then on a 1-1 pitch, Crump lined her game-winning shot to right center, sending the Broncos to their 17th-straight home win.

A junior, Work (3-2) went the distance for just the second time in her career. She allowed six hits, five earned runs and one walk, while striking out three.

Bertrand dropped to 7-6 after giving up eight hits and two walks with six Ks. Of the six runs she allowed, only three were earned.

Portland State (9-11) was originally slated to play both the Broncos and Minnesota today, but their game against the Golden Gophers was cancelled due to rain. The Vikings are back in action tomorrow, taking on Utah State at 9 a.m. PT. The game can be heard for free on GoViks.com, and live stats will also be available.

NOTES: Boise State earned its first victory over PSU in four tries ... the Broncos' 17-game home winning streak is the second longest in the nation behind BYU's 22-straight home wins ... Alexa Morales had a pinch-hit single for the Vikings in the seventh. Jenna Krogh had PSU's only other hit ... Crump and Tara Glover both had two hits for the Broncos ... Fine also hit a home run on Wednesday against No. 1 Alabama, but the game was stopped after two innings and all thus all statistics don't count.
