FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. –Three school records were either broken or tied on the first day of the 2012 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.
P'Lar Dorsett set the school record in the women's 60-meter hurdles while
Karene King tied her school record in the 200-meters.
Joenisha Vinson improved on her own record in the women's pentathlon to finish second overall for the event.
Vinson kicked off the Big Sky Indoor Championship with a silver medal in the women's pentathlon with a school record total of 3,686 points. Vinson finished second in the 60-meter hurdles to start pentathlon competition by tying her career best with a time of 8.64.
After a sixth place finish in the high jump, Vinson won the pentathlon's shot put competition with a career-best distance of 41-10.50 (12.76m). She then finished third in the long jump and ninth in the 800-meters to finish with the 3,686 points scoring eight points for the Vikings' women's squad.
Mandy Keifer finished ninth overall in the women's pentathlon with a career-best point total of 3,314 points which places her fifth all-time at Portland State for the event.
With the pentathlon finished, the Vikings turned their attention to individual track and field events. Dorsett followed Vinson's record setting performance with one of her own as she set the Portland State women's indoor record for the 60-meter hurdles in the preliminaries with a time of 8.50.
Dorsett along with Vinson and
Cassandra Sidner, who set a person-best time of 8.65, all advanced to the event finals scheduled for Saturday. Sidner now ranks third all-time at Portland State in the event.
Geronne Black, fresh off her Big Sky record setting time of 7.41 in the women's 60-meter dash, paced the field in the event with a time of 7.42 in the preliminaries. Black along with King,
Sierra Brooks and
Anaiah Rhodes all qualified for the event finals.
King set a personal-best time of 7.50 and now ranks third all-time at Portland State for the event. Brooks set a personal-best time of 7.55 as did Rhodes with a time of 7.65. They rank fifth and tied for eighth all-time at Portland State respectively in the 60-meter dash.
King followed up her personal-best time in the 60-meters by tying her school record in the 200-meters with a time of 24.02 to lead the field in the preliminaries. She leads Black, who ran a personal best of 24.90 into the finals on Saturday.
Jazmin Ratcliff set a personal-best time in the event with a time of 25.25 as did Rhodes with a time of 25-19. Racliff is now tied for eighth all-time at Portland State for the event.
Hanna Johnson picked up four team points for the Vikings in the women's shot put with a career-best distance of 46-02.00 (14.07m) to finish fifth overall in the event.
The quartet of
Brittany Castillo,
Ashley Frazier, Sarah Hanchett and
Amber Rozcicha teamed up in the women's distance medley for a time of 12:24.04 to finish second in the event and earn the Vikings another eight points on the day.
All totaled at the end of the first day of competition, the Vikings' women's team sits in seventh place with 20 points but is only 14 points behind Northern Arizona who sits in second with 34 points. The Vikings' women's team has nine event finals competitors in the 60-meters, 60-meter hurdles and 200-meter events scheduled for Saturday.
On the men's side,
Jake Ovgard started off competition for the Vikings in the men's 60-meter dash and finished fifth in his heat and ninth overall in the preliminaries with a time of 7.02. He just missed qualifying for the event finals by 0.06 seconds.
J.J. Rosenberg finished 10th overall in the prelims of the men's 400-meters with a season-best time of 49.08 but did not qualify for the event finals.
The squad of
John Lawrence, Rosenberg,
Taylen Howland and
Zach Carpenter teamed up to earn the men's team their only points on the first day of competition in the men's distance medley. They finished with a time of 10:34.93 which placed them sixth earning them three team points.
The Vikings will be back out on Saturday for the final day of competition at the 2012 Big Sky Indoor Championship at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz. Field events start at 10 a.m. PT with track events starting at 12:15 p.m. Live results can be found
