PORTLAND, Ore. – Cydney Horton had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and first-place Idaho State outrebounded Portland State by 15 in a 70-59 victory at the Stott Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings dropped to 13-11, 5-6 Big Sky, while Idaho State moved to 19-6, 11-1 Big Sky.
After the Vikings led early, 4-2, Idaho State scored 10 unanswered points and led the rest of the way. A 3-pointer from
Eryn Jones brought PSU within 12-10, but the Bengals slowly pulled away and held a 34-25 advantage at the break.
Portland State made a 8-2 run to start the second half behind five points from
Kate Lanz and an old-fashioned three-point play from Jones. Lanz' trey at the 17:28 mark pulled the Vikings within three, 36-33, but again Idaho State had an answer.
A pair of threes by Kaela Oakes fueled a run and Idaho State was in front 48-37 with 14:30 left. PSU closed the gap to seven at one point, but never got any closer.
Lanz led the Vikings with 15 points,
Courtney VanBrocklin scored 14, and
Allison Greene and Jones tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Oakes had a game-high 18 points for Idaho State, who outrebounded PSU, 41-26.
Portland State now hits the road for a critical game at Sacramento State on Feb. 18. PSU currently holds the sixth spot in the Big Sky standings with the Hornets two games behind them at 4-9. Only the top six teams advance to the league tournament and five teams have already clinched a spot.
