Kieran McDonagh accounted for six Portland State touchdowns as the Viking football team put on a 77-10 rout of the Idaho State Bengals in a Big Sky Conference game at JELD-WEN Field.
With 77 points, Portland State scored the most since Mouse Davis trod the sidelines in a 105-0 defeat of Delaware State on Nov. 8, 1980 - at then-Civic Stadium. The Vikings also rushed for 437 yards against the Bengals, breaking the school record of 436 set against this same Idaho State team one year ago in Pocatello. PSU's 758 yards of total offense was second most in school history.
The win ended a four-game PSU losing streak, improving their record to 2-4, 1-2 in Big Sky play. ISU dropped to 1-4, 0-2.
For his part, McDonagh crossed the goal line five times, four in rushes and one on a trick-play reception. He also threw for a score. McDonagh was 15-23 passing for 280 yards, carried 10 times for 66 yards and had a 22-yard reception.
Portland State opened the game with one of its finest drives of the season. McDonagh led the Vikings 85 yards on a 11 plays. He completed 5-5 passes for 45 yards and ran it in on a quarterback option from 26 yards out.
The defense was up for the challenge as well, holding the Bengals to only 13 yards of offense in the first quarter.
A trick play got McDonagh to the endzone early in the second period.
Thomas Carter took a pitch from McDonagh in the backfield and headed right, then threw the ball back over the top to the left to a drifting McDonagh, who scored from 22 yards out.
It was the first of four straight second-period possessions that were Viking touchdowns. McDonagh also scored on TD runs of 11 and 2 yards, and running back
DJ Adams had a 47-yard scoring burst.
By halftime, PSU had a remarkable 402 yards of offense and a 35-10 lead. PSU's defense was also solid, holding an ISU offense that came in averaging 400 yards passing to just 127 through the air. Included was an interception by
Henry Organ.
Portland State showed no mercy in the third quarter, scoring four more touchdowns, two on offense and two on defense.
McDonagh scored again on a two-yard run, and completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to
Thomas Carter. The defense scored on back-to-back plays from scrimmage as
Ian Sluss intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown, then
Khalil Bass picked up a fumble and raced 24 yards for a score on ISU's next possession.
The Vikings tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs by
Malcolm Johnson.
In all, 11 players had rushing yards for Portland State. Adams led the way with a career-high 148 on 14 carries.
Shaq Richard rushed nine times for 63 yards.
Carter caught a game-high six passes for 91 yards and a touchdown, as well as throwing for a touchdown.
Defensively, the Vikings forced five turnovers and had three sacks. Linebacker
Jaycob Shoemaker led the team with seven stops, including one for loss. Defensive end
Sadat Sulleyman made six tackles and sack. Organ also had six tackles to go with his interception.
The Bengals finished with 349 yards of offense, including 281 through the air.
GAME NOTES: The Vikings have beaten Idaho State three straight times… ISU has lost 36 consecutive road games… the legendary Mouse Davis, and his quarterback Neil Lomax were in the building watching the game. Davis was on the television broadcast for Comcast SportsNet... PSU wore new NIKE camoflague jerseys in the game... Portland State has a bye on Oct. 13, then returns to Big Sky Conference play against first-place Cal Poly (5-0, 3-0) on Oct. 20.
