POCATELLO, Idaho – A 15-point run just before halftime helped Idaho State take control of a tight game and the Bengals never trailed in running away from Portland State, 78-63, on Monday night in Big Sky Conference action.
The first-place Bengals led by as many as 25 points in the second half in improving their record to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in the Big Sky.
Portland State had its three-game win streak snapped and fell to 11-6, 3-2 Big Sky.
Idaho State jumped out to a 12-5 lead at the 14:40 mark of the first half, before PSU eventually knotted the score up at 22-22 on a pair of
Shauneice Samms free throws with 8:42 until the break. But a Chelsea Pickering jumper ignited a 15-0 Idaho State run during which the Bengals hit three straight 3-pointers.
The Bengals took a 45-30 lead into the locker room.
PSU scored the first two baskets after halftime, but from there it was all Idaho State. The Bengals went in front 64-39 with 11:47 left in the game and Portland State never seriously threatened again.
Pickering led all scorers with 21 points, while Cydney Horton had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Bengals, who shot 53.4 percent.
Kate Lanz paced the Vikings with 17 points,
Eryn Jones had 16 and six assists, and
Courtney VanBrocklin added 11.
PSU is back in action on Saturday, hosting Eastern Washington at 2 p.m.
NOTES: The Bengals are the only undefeated team in Big Sky play ... Jones moved into the PSU career top 10 for games played with 115. She also moved up to seventh in assists with 345 and to ninth all-time in 10-point games with 60 ... Lanz scored 12 points and pulled down all six of her rebounds in the second half.
