PORTLAND, Ore. – Behind the offense of
Carly McEachran and
Arielle Wiser, and the pitching of
Anna Bertrand,
Nichole Latham and
Karmen Holladay, the Portland State softball team closed out their conference regular season schedule in convincing fashion on Sunday, sweeping visiting Weber State by a combined score of 17-0.
The Vikings continued their impressive run through the PCSC Mountain Division by picking up a 6-0 victory in game one and a 11-0, five-inning victory in the second contest. PSU clinched the division title with a sweep of Weber State yesterday and ran their league winning streak to seven after today's victories.
Portland State (31-16, 16-4 PCSC) heads into next weekend's PCSC Championship Series having won 13 of its last 14 league contests and 18 of its last 19 games overall. The Vikings will take on Coastal Division champion Loyola Marymount in a best-of-three series next Friday and Saturday. The winner will earn the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
On Sunday against Weber State, McEachran had five hits and drove in three runs, and Wiser tallied three hits of her own while knocking in four runs. Portland State finished with 19 hits on the afternoon and finished the four-game series outhitting Weber State, 42-10.
In the opener, Portland State scored all six of its runs in the second inning.
Brandi Campos drove in the game's first run, scoring McEachran on an infield single.
Jenna Krogh and Wiser drew back-to-back bases loaded walks, before
Lacey Holm and
Crysta Conn both hit sacrifice flyouts to make the score 5-0.
McEachran registered three of PSU's six hits, while Latham (16-8) earned the win in the circle. Latham went the distance and had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings. She finished the game allowing just three hits, all singles, while walking two and striking out five to claim her ninth win in her last 10 decisions.
Krogh led off the second game with a double that carried over the center fielder's head and the rout was on. Portland State scored five runs on six hits in the top of the first and could have done even more damage, but left the bases loaded.
Wiser plated Krogh for the first run and three batters later
Danielle Lynn crushed a one-strike pitch over the right field fence for a three-run home run. Later in the inning,
Becca Bliss put the score at 5-0 with a single up the middle that scored McEachran.
Leading 4-0 going into the fourth, Portland State blew the game open after McEachran belted a changeup from pitcher Sarah Clark for a three-run homer to left center.
The Vikings scored their final two runs of the contest on an inside-the-park home run by Wiser. Weber State's center fielder and right fielder collided going after a drive to the right center gap and the ball rolled away, allowing Wiser to wheel around the bases.
Portland State finished with 13 hits as Wiser went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Krogh and Bliss both hit 2-for-2, and McEachran went 2-for-3. Bliss registered a pair of RBIs after also hitting a solo home run in the third inning.
Bertrand started on the rubber, winning her ninth straight decision to move to 14-8 on the season. In three innings of work, Bertrand gave up just one hit and struck out four. Holladay finished the game, giving up two hits with three Ks over the final two innings.
The Vikings, who outscored Weber State 33-0 in the series, host Oregon State on Tuesday in their final non-conference regular season game. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
