PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS
Wal mart shopping
Seven members of the Vikings track team on Wednesday night browsing the aisles

The Event Before The Main Event - Wednesday's Untold Story

SACRAMENTO, Calif.
- It's now the halfway point of the Big Sky Championship at Sacramento State and so far, Portland State has garnered one medal, with Joenisha Vinson taking the honor in the heptathlon. But before Vinson could finish her two-day competition, the real event began Wednesday night… At a Walmart.

Though it was not sanctioned by the Big Sky, 21-of-23 Vikings on the trip participated in the shopping event at the two-story Walmart Supercenter.

Though this may not sound like much of a newsworthy event, get 20-plus athletes that are conscious about their diets, in need of four-days worth of food and supplies, and the scene becomes a concentrated takeover of Viking green, white and silver.

It was not an uncommon site for the aisles to be filled with five-to-six athletes at a time, looking at the nutrition value of their food and then moving on to the next aisle with a furious pace. In essence it was like a time trial - a race to be the fastest to buy granola, sunscreen, bananas and pedialyte within 20 minutes, despite a 60-minute limit in the store.

Though many worked as individuals in the store for there own personal food stash, some worked in groups. Most notably distance runners Amber Rozcicha and Brittany Long, combining their per diem money and securing an entire grocery cart filled with enough supplies to last the next two weeks. Truthfully, the cart full of food will only make it through Friday evening.

With Geronne Black inspecting the quality of avocados, the "secret to her speed," team captain John Lawrene posing with the Coke "because PSU is a Coke school" and the overall controlled chaos in that store on El Camino Avenue, It really was a site to see.

With almost two full days of rest, the Viks will begin the open events of the Big Sky Championship at 2:30 p.m., today with senior Adrienne Davis leading the way in the shot put. Davis and 14 other Vikings will compete today in their respective preliminary and final events.

Senior Andrew Salg will close the evening for Portland State, running the grueling 10,000-meters at 7 p.m. Salg is No. 8 all-time in the Viking record book and finished 13th at last year's 25-lap epic at the Big Sky Championship.
