GREELEY, Colo. –
Jenna Krogh and Danielle Lynn combined for 10 of Portland State's 20 hits and the Vikings swept a crucial doubleheader at Northern Colorado on Sunday to take over sole possession of first place in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Mountain Division.

Krogh batted 2-for-2 and Lynn hit 3-for-3 to lead the Vikings to a 4-0 victory in the opener, then the duo teamed up for five more hits to help PSU take an easy 10-2 win in five innings in the second contest.

The Vikings took three of four games from the Bears over the weekend after the two teams entered the series tied for first in the Mountain Division. But the Vikings now hold down the top spot by themselves with a 12-4 record, one game up on Utah Valley (11-5). UNC fell into third place at 10-6.

Portland State also got two stellar pitching performances as Nichole Latham fired a three-hitter in game one and Anna Bertrand scattered four hits in the nightcap.

"It was a big day for us. We stepped up when we had to the most," said Vikings Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk. "Our offense came alive and our pitchers did an excellent job of keeping Northern Colorado in check."

Echo-Hawk praised the hitting Krogh and Lynn, as well as Lacey Holm, who went 4-for-5 with four RBIs on the day.

Latham (14-8) held the Bears hitless over the first five innings in the opener, then got out of a bases loaded jamb in the sixth. She walked just two and struck out five in throwing her fourth complete game shutout of the season.

PSU would get all the runs they would need in the second inning after Holm led off with her fourth home run of the season to left field. Then with two outs, Lynn doubled and scored on Brandi Campos' base hit to center.

Kelli Henderson (10-16) took the loss for Northern Colorado, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. Henderson struck out seven before giving way to Kacey Morgan.

Northern Colorado (14-34) used four pitchers in the second contest, but the Vikings battered each of them, finishing with 12 hits.

Krogh hit 3-for-4 with three runs scored after moving back up to the leadoff spot in the batting order, Holm went 3-for-3 and drove in three, and Lynn hit 2-for-2 and also had three RBIs.

Karmen Holladay and Carly McEachran both drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.

The game was tied 2-2 after two innings, before Portland State pounded out five hits to score four runs in the bottom of the third. Krogh, Arielle Wiser and Holm each hit singles to start the inning, with Holm's bringing in Krogh. Holladay made it 6-2 with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, then McEachran brought in two more with a double to left center.

Lynn doubled home two more runs in the fourth and Holladay had a RBI single in the frame, putting the Viks up 9-2.

Bertrand pitched all five innings for Portland State, winning her fifth straight decision to push her record to 11-8. Bertrand walked four and struck out eight, and only one of the two runs she allowed was earned.

Portland State (26-16) closes out its road trip with a non-conference doubleheader at Colorado State tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. PT, and both games can be heard on GoViks.com, with Teri Mariani calling the action.

NOTES:
Wiser had two sac bunts in the second game, pushing her school record total to 41 ... Crysta Conn had a pair of sacrifice flyouts in game two, giving her four on the season. She is riding a six-game hitting streak and leads the team with 16 multi-hit games ... Portland State hit .435 on the day and .363 for the series. Their efforts raised the team batting average to .302 for the year ... the Vikings have won 13 of their past 14 games.
