PORTLAND, Ore. – Behind the pitching of Kyli Flanary and Josi Summers, Utah Valley spoiled Portland State's 2011 Pacific Coast Softball Conference Mountain Division home opener by sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Erv Lind Stadium.
Flanary (3-8) helped the Wolverines take the opener, 5-4, by scattering eight hits over seven innings, and then Summers (6-10) gave up seven hits in a complete-game effort in the second contest as Utah Valley claimed a 4-1 victory.
One season after going 12-0 Erv Lind in PCSC games, the Vikings never could quite find a groove offensively against the Wolverines and dropped their first home conference game since 2009.
Things started well for Portland State as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener.
Karmen Holladay drove in the first two runs with a double to right field and
Brandi Campos followed with an RBI-single to center.
Utah Valley answered right back, though, with three runs in the top of third on three hits. The Wolverines took a 5-3 lead in the next frame on a Meghan Yocum two-run single down the left field line.
Carly McEachran brought the Vikings within 5-4 with an infield single in the sixth.
Crysta Conn hit a one-out double and pinch hitter
Alexa Morales then singled to shortstop, before McEachran brought in
Meghan Lyons, who had run for Conn. But that was all PSU would get as they stranded a pair of runners.
Anna Bertrand went the distance for Portland State, falling to 5-7 after giving up six hits and two walks. The sophomore righty did tally 12 strikeouts, fanning the last six batters she faced.
In the second game, Deianna Russell hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Amanda Robinson added a solo shot during the Wolverines' two-run sixth inning.
PSU was only able to muster one run, coming in the fourth when
Karmen Holladay singled in McEachran, who had earlier singled up the middle and stole second base.
The Vikings threatened in the fifth after
Sadie Lopez and
Jenna Krogh hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. But they eventually stranded both runners and ended up leaving eight on base for the game.
Nichole Latham (7-7) pitched a complete game for the Viks, giving up eight hits and two walks with three Ks.
Holladay finished with two hits as did
Arielle Wiser.
The Vikings (12-14, 0-2 PCSC) have lost six straight, while Utah Valley snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 9-18, 2-0 PCSC. The two teams meet up again tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
NOTES: Holladay finished the day 4-for-6 with three RBIs. McEachran went 2-for-5 ... Bertrand tallied her second double-digit strikeout performance of the season and the eighth of her career ... the Vikings struck out just three times but only drew two walks ... Utah Valley handed PSU its only two losses in conference play last year as the Vikings went 18-2.
