King Leads Vikings in Day One of Oregon Relays

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Karene King led the Vikings on day one of the Oregon Relays, finishing third overall in the 200-meters with a time of 23.86 seconds. The time is a new personal-record for the senior and is No. 2 all-time in the Portland State record book.

King broke the 24-second barrier for the first time in her career and surpassed her previous outdoor best, 24.18, by .34 seconds. Oregon's Amber Purvis broke the meet record to win the event with a blurring time of 23.13. She trails former NCAA Championship qualifier Jernise Saunders' record by .09 seconds.

The Tortola, British Virgin Islands native is the country's national indoor record holder and will compete for the country this summer in attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympic trials.

Freshman javelin thrower Allison Burkett recorded a new career-best in the event with a heave of 134 feet, one inch, an improvement of six inches. Burkett qualified for the Big Sky Championship April 2 at the Willamette Invitational with her throw of 133-7. She finished ninth in the field of 12.

Junior transfer J.J. Rosenberg won his heat of the 200-meters with a time of 22.41 seconds. Rosenberg is still looking to qualify for the outdoor championship in the 200 or the 400-meters, after finishing sixth in the 400-meters at the indoor championship.

In the women's discus freshman Shae Carson soared back into the 130's with her throw of 132 feet to finish ninth. With a season-best throw of 136-1, Carson is shy of the championship qualifying mark by one single inch.

The Vikings will continue their weekend in Eugene tomorrow to close out the Oregon Relays. PSU will hope to qualify more individuals for the Big Sky Championship May 11-4 in Sacramento, Calif.
