SEATTLE – Arielle Wiser went 5-for-5 in the opener and Portland State's offense continued to roll, racking up 28 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Seattle in PCSC action on Friday at Logan Field.
Wiser's big day at the plate was one of several for the Vikings, who improved to 19-15 overall and 7-3 in the PCSC Mountain Division. PSU wrapped out 15 hits in taking game one, 9-6, before tallying 13 more in an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Seattle fell to 9-27, 5-5 PCSC Mountain Division.
Nichole Latham and
Anna Bertrand did their part in the circle as well to aid in the victories. Latham struck out a season-high 10 batters in going the distance in the opener, while Bertrand fired a three-hitter in game two.
Carly McEachran got the day started right for the Vikings, hitting a leadoff double to right center before scoring on a single to left centerfield by Wiser.
Seattle answered back with a pair of runs on Jessica Ulrich's double to left center, before the Vikings took control with four unearned runs in the second inning. McEachran tied the game up with a sac fly and another run crossed the plate on the play when Redhawks center fielder Sarah Petosa dropped the ball.
Becca Bliss made it 4-1 when she stole home after McEachran got in a rundown between first and second, then Wiser drove in McEachran later in the frame.
Crysta Conn's towering solo shot to left field in the fifth put the Vikings up 7-3. Conn led off the seventh inning with a double and scored on
Alexa Morales' pinch-hit double. Two batters later,
Sarah McGregor brought in a run for her first career RBI on a sharply hit single to center field, putting Portland State up 9-3.
The Vikings needed the insurance runs as they committed two errors in the bottom of the seventh which allowed Seattle to score three runs. Latham eventually got out of the inning, getting Katie Gould to ground out to second base with runners on the corners.
Latham threw her 13th complete-game of the season, upping her record to 11-7 after scattering six hits and allowing just a pair of earned runs and three walks.
PSU's 15 hits were a season-best as they got three from Conn and two from
Sadie Lopez.
Richelle Ashburn (5-12) took the loss for the Redhawks, pitching all seven innings and walking one with four strikeouts. Only four of the nine runs she gave up were earned.
While the opener was basically a slugfest, lasting two hours and 15 minutes, the nightcap cruised along until the Vikings scored five runs in the seventh. Both pitchers faced the minimum through the first three innings and Bertrand was especially effective, throwing just 80 pitches for her third complete-game shutout of the season.
Bertrand (8-8) actually faced the minimum through four innings and allowed only five base runners all day. She finished with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Vikings scored all the runs they would need in the fourth inning, finally breaking through with three hits. McEachran led off with a base hit, stole second and then scored on
Jenna Krogh's single to left. Krogh eventually scored on
Lacey Holm's single down the right field line.
PSU added a solo run in the fifth after
Danielle Lynn led off with a triple to right center and scored on Bliss' infield single. The Vikings then exploded for five runs on six hits in the final frame.
Lynn again got things going, leading off with a double and scoring on Conn's single to center. McEachran and
Brandi Campos drove in the next two runs, before McGregor made it 7-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field. Morales capped the scoring with a RBI-single to center.
Holm, Krogh, Lynn and McEachran each had two hits for the Vikings.
Ulrich fell to 3-12 for Seattle, walking one and striking out four. All eight runs she allowed were earned.
