Joenisha Vinson Named Big Sky's Field Athlete of the Week

OGDEN, Utah - With her stellar win at the California Invitational in the heptathlon last week, junior Joenisha Vinson has been named the Big Sky's Field Athlete Week. Vinson went on to score 5,227 points in the two-day event April 13-14 in Asuza, Calif., and win her section of the competition by seven points.

Vinson recorded personal-bests in three-of-seven events at Asuza Pacific, including a school-record 13.83 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. The time in the hurdles earned her 1,003 points, the first-time in Portland State history that any heptathlete scored 1,000 plus-points in an event.

The 5,227 points in the heptathlon is No. 2 all-time at PSU, behind two-time national champion Robin Unger. Vinson's score currently ranks her 19th in the country in the heptathlon and her time in the 100-meter hurdles ranks her 39th in the West region.

The Phoenix, Ariz., native is one of the top athletes in school-history, owning seven Portland State records (55, 60 and 100-meter hurdles, pentathlon, 4x100 relay and indoor/outdoor 4x400 relays). Vinson is also in the career top-10 in 15-different events, indoor and outdoor.

The award is the Vikings third of the season, second during outdoors, with Karene King taking honors Jan. 25 and the 4x100-meter relay team taking honors March 22. Members of the relay included Geronne Black, King, Anaiah Rhodes and Vinson.

Vinson and the rest of the Vikings will compete at this weekend's Oregon Relays April 22-23. To follow the meet on Live Stats, click here.
