CHUBBUCK, Idaho – Anna Bertrand earned a win and a save, and Sadie Lopez made a pair of spectacular defensive plays in left field to help the Vikings earn a sweep of Idaho State on Saturday at Capell Park in PCSC Mountain Division play.

The Vikings won both games, by scores of 4-3 and 3-2, to even their overall record at 15-15 and their conference mark at 3-3.

Portland State had to rally in the opener as they trailed 1-0 going into their last turn at bat. The Vikings wrapped out four hits and took advantage of three walks to score four runs in the inning, before Bertrand came on in relief in the bottom half of the frame to help preserve the win.

Heading into the seventh, PSU had managed just three hits off of Idaho State starter Kandis Clesson. That all changed, though, when Jenna Krogh led off the inning with a single to left field. After Arielle Wiser sacrificed Krogh over to second, Lacey Holm tied the game up with a RBI-single, chasing Clesson from the game.

Relief pitcher Christina Rayner was able to record one out, but Kayla Norrie and Carly McEachran hit back-to-back singles to bring in two more runs and Becca Bliss drew a bases loaded walk, making it 4-1.

Vikings starter Nichole Latham had mostly held the Bengals in check through six innings, giving up a solo homer to Brittany Olsin, but ran into trouble in the seventh.Three straight doubles allowed Idaho State to score a pair of runs, before Bertrand came on and retired all three batters she faced to earn PSU's first save of 2011.

PSU finished with seven hits and also drew seven walks, but stranded 12 runners in the game. Holm led the way, batting 2-for-4.

Latham got the win, improving to 9-7 after allowing eight hits and three runs in six innings. She struck out a season-high eight and walked three.

In the second game, Bertrand (6-8) fired a four-hitter, striking out six and walking three.

PSU scored the games first two runs, getting a leadoff homer from Lynn in the second and a run-scoring single from Lopez in the fourth.

The Bengals (7-25, 0-6 PCSC) knotted the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Bertrand walked the first two batters of the inning and the Bengals eventually scored twice on a pair of hits.

Portland State scored what proved to be the game-winning run the next inning as Holm doubled to right center with two outs and Norrie plated her with a single to center.

Crysta Conn and Lopez each had two hits and the Vikings tallied nine as a team.

Lopez made the final two outs of the ball game, making a diving grab to take away a hit from Desirae Hoffman, before robbing Olsin of a game-tying home run with a jumping catch at the fence.

"Sadie had two outstanding plays in the seventh that helped seal the victory. She saved the game with the catch at the fence," said PSU Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk.

"I'm proud of the way the kids battled today. We played two tough games and we did the things we needed to for us to come out on top. Anna pitched really well and that was a big key to the victories."

PSU and Idaho State play another doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m. PT.
