TUCSON – Danielle Lynn drove in three runs and Nichole Latham pitched a complete-game four-hitter as Portland State closed out its trip to the Wildcat Invitational with a 5-2 victory in eight innings over Utah State on Sunday morning.

The Vikings appeared to have the game wrapped up going into the final frame with a 2-0 lead. Latham had allowed just one hit at that point, but the Aggies benefited from a Portland State error to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh and tie the contest up.

The eighth started under international tie-breaker rules and Crysta Conn was placed at second base for PSU. After Sadie Lopez moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, Becca Bliss hit a running-scoring double down the left field line. Two batters later, Jenna Krogh reached on an infield single, then Arielle Wiser walked to load the bases. Lynn stepped the plate and drove the first pitch she saw to left field, plating both Bliss and Krogh and giving the Vikings a 5-2 lead.

Utah State managed to load the bases with one out in their half of the eighth, but Latham got Kali Cancelosi to pop up to Wiser at short and then the senior righty struck out Krista Bava looking to end the game.

Portland State scored its first two runs in the fifth, with Wiser and Lynn both driving in runs during the inning.

Latham continued her brilliant start to her final season on the Park Blocks, sitting the Aggies down in order in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In eight innings of work, Latham scattered four hits, allowed two unearned runs, walked one and struck out four. She finished the three-day tournament with a 2-1 record and a 0.35 earned run average, while holding opposing hitters to a .162 batting average.

The Vikings (11-7) finished with 11 hits, the third time in five games in Tucson they reached double-digits.

Lynn led the way, going 2-for-4, while Jenna Krogh was 2-for-5 and Sadie Lopez went 2-for-2 and hit her team-leading fifth double of 2011.

Mandy Harmon went the distance for Utah State, falling to 2-9. The sophomore walked three and struck out three.

PSU is back in action next week, heading up I-5 to play in the Husky Softball Classic hosted by the University of Washington. The Vikings will play three games over two days, opening with a 9 a.m. contest against Oregon State on Saturday, March 12.
