LAST TIME OUT:
Vikings
Joenisha Vinson and
J.J. Rosenberg opened the week for Portland State in the Bay Area at the Cal Multi Event. After solid day one performances by the duo, day two of "group a" heptathlon and decathlon's were canceled due to high winds and heavy rain.
After four events, Vinson ended with a score of 3,021 points and was in second-place behind professional Sharon Day. Rosenberg registered 3,213 points after five events in the decathlon and sat in ninth-place. He won the 400-meters race in the fifth and final event with a season-best time of 49.62 and Vinson recorded a PR of 24.81 seconds to qualify for the Big Sky Championship.
The two migrated to Stanford from Berkeley, Calif., to meet up with the rest of the team for the Stanford Invitational. Though the conditions dampened the event at California, it only made the Vikings stronger at Stanford.
Sophomore
Geronne Black finished second in the 100-meters with a school-record time of 11.65 seconds. Teammate
Karene King finished sixth in the final race with a of time of 11.81. King ran a personal-best, 11.80 in the preliminary round and moved up to a tie for sixth all-time at PSU.
King also exploded to a personal-best in the 200-meters as well with a time of 24.19 seconds, surpassing her old mark by .03 seconds.
Rosenberg also competed at Stanford, running a 49.70 in the 400-meters and finishing third in his heat. Teammate
Nate Lightner clocked a 49.84 in his heat to finish fourth. Vinson also competed in the meet, participating with the 4x100 relay team of Black, King and
Anaiah Rhodes, who also qualified for the Big Sky Championship in the 100-meters. The four recorded a combined time of 46.14 seconds to finish fifth
In the distance portion for the Vikings, sophomore
Amber Rozcicha doubled up in the 800 and 1,500-meters and recorded times of 2:24.24 and 4:56.56, respectively. Junior
Tony Crisofulli ran a 1:52.52 in the 800-meters to finish 22nd overall at the meet.
In the field, senior
Adrienne Davis won her flight of the shot put competition with a throw of 43 feet, 5.25 inches and classmate
Mikeya Nicholson finished 10th in the top-flight of the triple jump with a mark of 37-4.
SHE'S NOT FAST - SHE'S WICKED FAST:
Sophomore
Geronne Black was flying Friday at the Stanford Invitational, running an 11.80 in the preliminary round to win her heat and following up with a school-record 11.65 in the final. She finished second overall with the 11.65 and now ranks 17th in the NCAA.
Black, originally from Arima, Trinidad & Tobago, is currently the fastest 100-meters sprinter in the state of Oregon and the fastest sophomore in the NCAA.
HE AIN'T FRED FLINTSTONE, BUT HE'S CLOSE:
Last weekend at the Stanford invitational, junior
Tony Crisofulli recorded a time of one minute, 52.52 seconds in the 800-meters to finish 22nd overall in the race. Though Crisofulli's personal-best is 1:49.76, you have to give kudos to the Vail, Colo., native for accomplishing the 1:52.52 under the circumstances.
Somewhere on the first lap of the race, Crisfofulli's shoe was kicked off but he still managed to run a 55 second split after the first lap. During his second, Crisofulli lost his shoe and crossed the finish line with only one shoe on but still finished seventh in his heat. Yabba-Dabba Doo!
