PORTLAND, Ore. – Monique Fuiava drove in eight runs and 15th-ranked Oregon pounded out 21 hits over two games in sweeping host Portland State, 8-3 and 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Erv Lind Stadium.
The Vikings (12-12) had 2-0 leads in both games, but the Ducks rallied for a pair of victories and improved to 24-4.
Portland State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of the opener on a
Karmen Holladay two-run homer that landed in the trees behind the left field fence.
Oregon answered with a solo run in the fourth and then took a 5-4 lead in the next frame after Monique Fuiava hit a grand slam to left. The Ducks had loaded the bases with no outs, but PSU pitcher
Nichole Latham was able to induce back-to-back groundouts and got within one strike out getting Fuiava out, before the Ducks senior designated played hit a high fly ball that carried out of the park.
The Ducks tallied 14 hits, with leadoff batter Courtney Ceo going 3-for-3, and Fuiava, Samantha Pappas and Brittany Rumfelt each recording two hits. Ceo and Pappas both hit solo home runs in the seventh, and Fuiava registered five RBIs.
Rumfelt go the win, moving to 2-0 after scattering three hits and striking out seven in a complete-game effort.
Latham (7-6) worked all seven innings for the Vikings. She struck out four and walked one.
In the nightcap,
Arielle Wiser led off the bottom of the fourth for PSU with a solo shot to left center, and three batters later,
Brandi Campos drove a 1-2 pitch over the center field fence for her first home run of the season.
Oregon scored once in the sixth, before scoring three in the seventh to pull out another come-from-behind victory. With two outs and runners on second and third in the inning, Fuiava homered yet again, giving Oregon a 4-2 advantage.
Mikayla Endicott (3-2) got the win in relief for the Ducks, pitching the final 3 1/3 innings and giving up three hits with one strike out.
PSU's
Anna Bertrand fell to 5-6 after allowing four earned runs and seven hits in a complete-game effort. She recorded five strikeouts and walked one.
The Vikings are now off for 17 days before opening PCSC Mountain Division play on Friday, April 9, at home against Utah Valley.
