CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite two good pitching performances by
Nichole Latham and
Anna Bertrand, Portland State lost a pair of games at Oregon State on Tuesday by scores of 4-3 and 2-0.
The Beavers (14-8) took the opener in eight innings, then scored twice in the sixth inning of the second game for another victory.
Latham (7-5) started the first game for Portland State, giving up four runs – three of which were earned – and eight hits, while walking two and striking out two.
Oregon State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third on a RBI-single by Mary Claire Brenner, before Portland State got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth.
With two outs in the frame,
Carly McEachran doubled and
Brandi Campos drew a pinch-hit walk.
Crysta Conn followed with a single to center, bringing in both runners and giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
OSU answered in their half of the sixth on a two-run pinch-hit home run by Audrey Roderfeld to regain the lead.
The Vikings knotted the game up at 3-3 in the seventh when
Danielle Lynn singled in
Becca Bliss, and then Latham sat the Beavers down in order to send the game into extra innings.
PSU was unable to get a run across and Oregon State ended up winning on Paige Hall's single to left center that brought in McKenna Lowe from third base.
Conn led Portland State at the plate, going 2-for-4.
Paige Hall came on in relief of starter Marina Demore to pitch the final 1 1/3 innings for the Beavers and earned the victory.
In game two, Bertrand (5-5) pitched masterfully for six of the seven innings, but got into trouble in the sixth and the Vikings weren't able to muster any offense against Hall.
Bertrand gave up a hit in each of the first three innings, but that was all the Beavers would get. In the sixth, the sophomore righty walked three batters, hit another and threw three wild pitches, which led to both of Oregon State's runs.
The Vikings had their chances, but left the bases loaded in the sixth and stranded two runners in both the third and seventh innings.
Jenna Krogh paced PSU offensively, collecting two of the team's six hits.
Hall went the distance for the Beavers, improving to 4-2. She walked one and struck out five.
Portland State (12-10) plays its first home games of the season when they host No. 15 Oregon tomorrow for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
