Portland State Qualifies Seven for Big Sky Championship at Oregon Preview

EUGENE, Ore.
- The Portland State track team closed the Oregon Preview with two event wins and one heat winner in the sprints. Sophomore Geronne Black and junior Joenisha Vinson were the event winners, taking the 100-meters and 100-meter hurdles, respectively.

Black, a native of New York City, took the 100-meters, her first such race of the season, with a time of 11.98 seconds. She was .07 seconds shy of tying her personal-best in the event. Black won the race at last year's Oregon Preview.

Vinson took the 100-meter hurdles with a time 14.36 seconds, edging Oregon's Rebecca Rhodes by .01 seconds and qualifying for the Big Sky Championship.

A record was almost shattered in the 4x100-meter relay, as Vinson and Black, along with senior Karene King and junior Anaiah Rhodes, running a 45.92 to finish second in the event behind Oregon. The quartet was .01 shy of tying the all-time mark at PSU.

Junior DeShawn Shead won his heat in the 200-meters, recording 22.28 in the event and just shy of Big Sky qualification in the event. He also finished second overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.68 seconds.

After redshirting last outdoor season and making her 2011 Viking debut, senior Mikeya Nicholson finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet, 11 inches and qualified for the Big Sky Championships.

Also qualifying the outdoor championship were Tony Crisofulli (800-meters), Jeff Borgerson (high jump), King (200-meters), Black (100-meters) and Adrienne Davis (shot put).

Vinson and J.J. Rosenberg will be competing at the Cal Multi Event March 24 and 25 and the rest Viks will return to action March 26 and 27 for the Stanford Invitational.
