SEATTLE –
Lacey Holm drove in four runs and five Portland State players recorded two hits as the Vikings defeated Seattle, 10-2, in five innings, after losing 2-1 to USC Upstate earlier in the day at the Husky Softball Classic.

Portland State (12-8) was originally scheduled to play Oregon State in the morning, but the Beavers elected to forgo their final two games at the tourney due to the forecast of rain. So, the Vikings ended up taking on USC Upstate, a team from South Carolina they had never faced before.

The Spartans entered the game 25-1 and ended up with another victory after rallying with two runs in the fifth inning.

PSU started the scoring off in the second inning on a solo home run by Carly McEachran, her third of the year. But the Vikings had just one hit from there as Upstate pitcher Morgan Childers quieted PSU's bats.

In the fifth, a Vikings' fielding error extended the Spartans turn at bat and Janna Lewis delivered a two-run double for what proved to be the winning runs.

Childers (19-0) held the Viks to just four hits in a complete-game effort, striking out 10 and walking none.

Anna Bertrand was the tough-luck loser, falling to 5-4 after giving up five hits, two unearned runs and striking out eight over six innings.

"It was definitely a tough loss. They are a good team and their record shows it," said PSU Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk. "It's awfully hard to play a team you didn't know you were playing until just an hour or so before."

The Vikings came out slow against Seattle, getting just one hit over the first two innings. The Redhawks, meanwhile, were able to score a pair of runs in the top of the first on two hits and a walk.

Portland State's offense finally came alive in the third inning as Arielle Wiser hit a run-scoring double to left center and Lacey Holm blasted a two-run homer, also to left center, putting PSU up 3-2.

In the next frame, Portland State upped its lead to 8-2. Becca Bliss, Jenna Krogh and Arielle Wiser each drove in a run, before Holm singled to right center to bring in two more.

The Vikings then finished off the Redhawks with two runs in the fifth, with Bliss and Krogh again driving in runs.

Holm, Krogh, Wiser, Sadie Lopez and Alexa Morales all went 2-for-3, and Nichole Latham earned the win in the circle to improve to 7-4. In five innings, the senior righty gave up six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

"We did a nice job of bouncing back and we hit really well against Seattle," said Echo-Hawk. "So far this year we've done a good job of coming right back after a tough loss and getting ready to play and that's a good sign."

Portland State closes out their stay at the Husky Softball Classic by playing No. 5/6 Washington tomorrow at 2 p.m.
