SACRAMENTO – Brandi Campos singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Portland State past Cal State Bakersfield, 6-5, at the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Crossover Tournament on Saturday morning.
The Vikings (7-5) got all the could handle from a winless Roadrunners squad that fell to 0-10 with the loss. Cal State Bakersfield scored four runs over the first two innings, then tied it up in the top of the seventh, 5-5, and the game went to the international tie-breaker rule.
After the Roadrunners were unable to put a run across in their half of the eighth, the Vikings ended up winning on a single up the middle by Campos, who came in the game in the top of the fifth for injured right fielder
Becca Bliss.
Arielle Wiser was placed at second to start PSU's turn in the frame. After
Crysta Conn popped up trying to advance the runner,
Karmen Holladay moved Wiser over with a groundout to short.
Carly McEachran then walked, setting the stage for Campos.
"She (Brandi) has always been a clutch player for us. It was just the right person to have up at the plate in that situation," said Vikings Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk.
Cal State Bakersfield opened up the scoring with a run in the first, taking advantage of PSU's
Anna Bertrand being called for two illegal pitches. In the second inning, the Roadrunners strung together four hits for three runs and led 4-0.
The Vikings' bats didn't awaken until the fifth, but when they did, Portland State was able to score five runs in the inning.
Danielle Lynn led off with a walk and came around to score on
Lacey Holm's triple to right field.
Arielle Wiser followed with a RBI-double down the left field line and then Conn singled home Wiser. Two batters later, McEachran blasted her first career home run to put the Vikings up 5-4.
Holm led the Vikings by going 3-for-4, while Wiser was 2-for-4.
Jenna Krogh hit one of two triples in the game for PSU and extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Bertrand got the victory to improve to 4-2. In a complete-game effort, the sophomore righty allowed five runs on seven hits and six walks, while striking out four.
"We did a nice job of battling back in the fourth when we scored all of those runs," said Echo-Hawk. "Lacey had another great game at the plate and Anna did a good job of settling in after the first few innings."
Jamie Miller and Ryane Petersen both had two hits for the Roadrunners. Relief pitcher Sarah Hoag (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up five hits and two runs over the final 4 2/3 innings.
Portland State is back in action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., against Saint Mary's. Live stats will be available through Sac State's website, Hornetsports.com.
NOTES: PSU has won the last three meetings with CSUB, but the Roadrunners still hold a 15-11 lead in the all-time series ... Bertrand moved up to seventh all-time at PSU in strikeouts with 270. She needs two more to take over the sixth slot ... Krogh has at least one hit in 11 of 12 games ... Holm has driven in a run in eight of 12 contests. She leads the Vikings in batting average (.481) and RBIs (13) ... tomorrow's game against Saint Mary's will be a rematch of last year's PCSC Championship Series, which the Gaels won, two games to won, to advance to the NCAA tournament and end PSU's season.
