Black and King Win Gold on Final Day of Big Sky Indoor Championships

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Portland State track and field team claimed two gold medals on the women's side at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. Sophomore Geronne Black broke a plethora of records in the 60-meters and the senior Karene King won the 200-meters championship to lead the women to a seventh place finish.

Black, a native of New York City, won the 60-meters championship with her raw time of 7.43 seconds and altitude adjusted time of 7.45. It is her second-consecutive championship in the short sprints, having won the 55-meters at last year's Big Sky Championship. Black also finished fourth in the 200-meters with her career-best 24.94, the fourth-fastest time in school history.

Black is the Big Sky's first back-to-back conference champion in the 55/60-meters since Joyce Rainwater of Eastern Washington accomplished the feat in 1994-95. She broke the PSU and Big Sky Championship record in the 60-meters and tied the conference's all-time record of 7.43.

The Tortola, British Virgin Islands native, King, recorded a time of 24.10 in the 200-meters to claim the conference's top-honor. She defeated Montana State's Camille Marchand by .30 seconds. King finished just off the medal stand in the 60-meters with a 7.67, .01 behind third-place Alicia Truesdale of Sacramento State.

Also earning all-conference honors for the Vikings was junior Tony Crisofulli in the 800-meters, recording a 1.51.26 and claiming third-place, only .52 behind the first-place winner, Idaho State's Eric Strand. It is the first medal of Crisofulli's career and he is the only male this year to claim one for the Vikings.

The women's 60-meters was a big points shift for Portland State in the overall standings, as the Vikings finished first, fourth, fifth and sixth. P'Lar Dorsett closed the event in fifth with a 7.71 and Anaiah Rhodes finished sixth with an identical 7.71. Dorsett also placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.82 seconds and Rhodes finished eighth in the 200-meters with a 25.63.

Joenisha Vinson competed in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles today and finished fourth in the event with a time of 8.69. Vinson was a silver medalist last year in 55-meter hurdles.

Adrienne Davis was the women's last scorer, finishing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 0.50 inches. Teammate Shae Carson, competing in her first Big Sky Championship, recorded a PR of 42-6.25 in the shot put to finish ninth in the event and just outside of scoring range.

The 54.5 points score by PSU was the most since 2007, when the Vikings finished third with 99.5 points.

On the men's side, J.J. Rosenberg finished sixth in the 400-meters at 50.24 seconds. Rosenberg also finished 10th in the heptathlon today with a score of 4,230.

Junior DeShawn Shead finished the 60-meter hurdles in fifth-place with a time of 8.35 seconds to earn four points for the men's team point total. Shead, along with Rosenberg, Crisofulli and Nate Lightner, finished seventh in the 4x400 relay at 3:26 minutes.

Just outside of scoring range for the men were John Lawrence and Zach Carpenter in the mile and 3,000-meters. Lawrence finished ninth with a time of 4:23.97 and Carpenter ran a 8:54.01 to finish 14th overall.

The Vikings close the indoor season and will now move to the outdoors, beginning March 13 at the Northwest Conference Preview and the Oregon Preview March 20.
