HENDERSON, Nev. – Sadie Lopez and
Danielle Lynn each hit two-run home runs and Portland State finished with 12 hits as the Vikings closed out the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic with a 7-1 victory over Cal Poly on Sunday morning.
Portland State finished the three-day event 3-2, with both loses coming to nationally ranked teams. PSU is now 6-5 on the season.
The Vikings swung the bats well all day against the Mustangs and made Cal Poly go through three pitchers.
Jenna Krogh set the tone for Portland State, leading off the game with a triple that landed just inside the left field foul line. Three batters later,
Lacey Holm brought Krogh home with a single to left field.
In the third, Lopez lined a 0-1 pitch over the fence in right center for her second homer of the year.
Arielle Wiser was on first at the time after hitting a one-out single to center field, and the Vikings led 3-0. Three batters later, and with
Crysta Conn on base, Lynn blasted a 1-2 pitch over the left centerfield fence, to put the Vikings up 5-0.
Cal Poly would get a solo run in the bottom half of the inning, but it was unearned as PSU committed an error during the frame.
Portland State added single runs in the fourth and the fifth to finish the scoring. Holm brought in the first run with a sac fly to deep right field, while
Karmen Holladay drove in the other run on a pinch-hit single with the bases loaded.
Krogh went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and extended her hitting streak to eight games, while Lynn and Wiser also had two hits.
Alexa Morales hit one of two triples in the game for the Vikings, a shot off the right field fence in the third.
While the offense might have stole the show,
Nichole Latham was just as effective in the circle for PSU. The senior righty evened her record at 3-3 after giving up only five hits, one unearned run and two walks. She struck out five in a complete-game effort.
Cal Poly starter Rebecca Patton (1-4) took the loss after allowing six hits and five runs over 2 2/3 innings. Offensively for the Mustangs, leadoff hitter Kim Westlund went 2-for-4.
Portland State is back in action next weekend when they travel to Sacramento for the PCSC Crossover Tournament. The Vikings will play four games, starting with a 12:30 p.m. contest against host Sac State.
