HENDERSON, Nevada -- Anna Bertrand tossed a one-hitter and Portland State pounded out 10 hits in a 8-0, five-inning victory over Nevada on Saturday morning at the Louisville Desert Classic.
Bertrand bounced back from a shaky start yesterday against Cal State Northridge to keep Nevada hitless until Lauren's Lastrapes fourth-inning single. It would be the only hit the sophomore righty would give up as she finished with six strikeouts and upped her record to 3-2.
PSU (5-4) plays again today against top-ranked and defending national champion UCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 p.m., but the game will most likely be pushed back. Check back on GoViks.com for updates.
While Bertrand was pitching effectively in the circle, the Vikings' offense was hot throughout the game. Portland State scored three times in the top of the second and then added five more runs in the fourth.
Freshman
Crysta Conn continued her torrid play of late, leading off the second with a single up the middle. After an out,
Karmen Holladay doubled to right center and
Danielle Lynn reached on a infield single to load the bases. Conn scored on a wild pitch, before Becca Blliss was hit by a pitch to again load the bases.
Jenna Krogh then drove in a run with an infield single of her own and
Arielle Wiser drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0.
In the fifth, Holm singled home
Sadie Lopez and Conn hit a sac fly with the bases full to score Wiser, making it 5-0.
Alexa Morales then roped a pinch-hit double down the left field line to bring in two more runs and
Danielle Lynn hit a RBI-single to right, pushing the Vikings' lead to 8-0. All five of PSU's runs were unearned after the Wolfpack committed an error early in the inning.
Krogh and Lynn both tallied two hits, and junior transfer
Sarah McGregor came off the bench to record a pinch-hit single in her first at-bat as a Viking.
The Wolfpack went through three pitchers in the game, with Mallary Darby starting and also coming back in the fifth. Darby (2-4) took the loss, allowing six hits and three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings.
NOTES: PSU also defeated Nevada earlier this season, 6-3, on Feb. 11, in Tempe ... PSU leads the all-time series with Nevada, 21-13-1 ... Holm and Krogh extended their hitting streaks to six-straight games. Krogh also tallied her team-leading third multi-hit game.
