TEMPE, Ariz. – Anna Bertrand matched her career-high with 16 strikeouts and Portland State won its second straight game at the Kajikawa Classic on Friday, defeating Nevada, 6-3.

The Pacific Coast Softball Conference Mountain Division Pitcher of the Year as a freshman last season, Bertrand mowed down Wolfpack hitter after Wolfpack hitter, escaping several jambs with strikeouts. Only once did she fail to strikeout at least two Nevada batters in an inning and struck out the side in the first, fourth and fifth innings.

PSU's offense continued to pick up steam, collecting seven hits, including two doubles and a triple.

The Vikings struck first with two runs in the second inning. Crysta Conn had a groundout-RBI and Sadie Lopez scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0.

PSU made it 4-0 in the top of the fifth after Lacey Holm singled in two runs with a chopper over the head of Nevada first baseman Lauren Lastrapes.

After the Wolfpack stranded three runners in the first, they threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Lastrapes plated two runners with a single through the left side and a third runner came around to score on the play on a PSU throwing error. After Bertrand issued a walk to put runners on the corners, she responded by striking out Alex Hayes to end the threat.

Leading 4-3, Portland State gave itself a cushion with two runs in the top of the sixth.

With one out, Lopez doubled to left field, went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Carly McEachran's triple to center. One batter later, Conn doubled home McEachran to make it 6-3.

Even though she walked a career-high eight batters, Bertrand matched her best strikeout performance with 16, set against Idaho State on April 24, 2010.

"I felt like I was in a rhythm and I had more control as opposed to yesterday. It was just an all-around better feeling today," said Bertrand, who scattered three hits in the contest.

Said PSU Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk: "Anna did a great job today. She got herself out of a couple of tough situations by keeping their hitters off-balance. Having sixteen strikeouts in a game by anybody is pretty phenomenal."

Lopez and McEachran led the Vikings' offense as both went 2-for-3. Conn and Holm both drove in two runs.

Mallary Darby suffered the loss for Nevada (0-1), walking three, striking out six and giving up four earned runs.

Portland State (2-1) is back in action tomorrow in Tempe, playing San Jose State at 11 a.m. PT and No. 20 Stanford at 6 p.m. PT. Live audio and live stats will be available for both games.

NOTES: PSU snapped a three-game losing streak to Nevada. The Vikings lead the all-time series 20-13-1 ... Lopez (two doubles) and McEachran (two triples) have four of the Vikings' five extra-base hits this season ... PSU has started a season 2-1 for the first time since 2000.
