Titans Rally In Second Half, Take Down Vikings, 92-86

Box Score

Fullerton, CA - Cal State Fullerton's trio of starting guards ignited a second-half run and gave the Titans a 92-86 win over Portland State in a non-conference game at Titan Gym.

Kwame Vaughn, DJ Seeley and Isiah Umipig combined for 66 points and made 10 of 20 three-point attempts for CSF. The Titans trailed for the first 25 minutes but outscored PSU 56-44 in the second half.

It looked good for the Vikings early on as they led 15-4 after five minutes. Lateef McMullan paced the hot start, scoring 10 points in the first 11 minutes. Martin Whitmore maintained the momentum for the Vikings hitting three shots in a row, including two from three-point range, after coming off the bench.

A Whitmore three-pointer had PSU up 37-25 with 5:08 left in the first half. But the Titans closed out the half on an 11-5 run, making it 42-36 Vikings at intermission.

CSF continued its charge into the second half and finally took its first lead at 50-49 when Vaughn hit a three-pointer with 16:43 to play. The Titans hit eight of their first 11 overall, moving out to a 57-51 advantage. That lead continued to grow to as many as 18 before Portland State closed it to six at the end.

Fullerton made 21-35 shots in the second half (.600) and 8-10 (.800) from three-point range after making just 12-32 first-half shots.

"They are explosive on offense," said Viking Coach Tyler. "I thought the way we played in the first half we kept them in check, but they are an explosive offensive team. They showed it."

The Vikings made 34-64 in the game (.531), but couldn't maintain the Titans' three-point pace.

Vaughn led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds. Seeley scored 23 points.

Charles Odum led six Vikings in double figures with 19 points. McMullan finished with 14 points. Chehales Tapscott scored 12 points with seven rebounds and six assists.

Portland State dropped its fourth game in five outings and is 6-6 on the season heading into Big Sky Conference play next week.

"We've got to get back at it and not hang our heads. We have some big conference road games coming up next week," said Geving.

Cal State Fullerton improved to 8-3 on the season and won its fifth game in a row.
