HONOLULU – A strong second half from
Kate Lanz and a game-high 25 points from
Courtney VanBrocklin helped Portland State to a 68-57 come from behind victory over UC Davis on Monday night at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout.
Lanz scored eight of her 15 points down the stretch as the Vikings rallied over the final 12 minutes for the win.
Portland State (6-4) jumped out to a 11-6 lead behind four points each from VanBrocklin and
Karley Lampman, and a three-pointer by
Eryn Jones.
The game was a back-and-forth affair over the rest of the first half. Two free throws by
Keaton McFadden helped PSU tie the game at 20-20 with 2:21 until the break, but the Aggies eventually took a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the half, Lanz hit a jumper before VanBrocklin drilled a three and scored on a fastbreak layup to put the Vikings up 35-33.
UC Davis answered with a run of its own and went in front, 44-39, with 12:35 left on a layin by Brianna Salvatore. 17 seconds later, Lanz hit a jump shot and the Vikings' rally was on.
At the 10:33 mark, VanBrocklin scored to pull PSU within one, before Jones hit another 3-pointer to give them the lead, 46-44. The Aggies responded with four straight points to go back in front, but again Portland State rallied.
Lariel Powell found
Shauneice Samms for a jumper to tie the game, and VanBrocklin scored on consecutive possessions to make it 52-48. Portland State never trailed again.
"Tonight was about resiliency," said Vikings Head Coach
Sherri Murrell. "It was a game of runs and we were resilient and pushed through. We were able to get our running game going and I thought that hurt them (UC Davis) the most."
The Vikings, led by the efforts of Lanz, also controlled the boards, outrebounding an opponent (42-35) for just the third time this season.
Lanz pulled down 15 rebounds, including nine in the second half, for the highest total by a Viking in almost eight years. She also scored 12 of her 15 points over the final 20 minutes.
VanBrocklin was equally impressive, scoring 15 of her 25 points in the second half. She shot 7 of 15 from the floor and 10 of 10 at the free-throw line to tie a PSU single game record.
The Vikings also got solid contributions from McFadden, who had six points and six rebounds, and Lampman, who scored 12 points, including 10 in the first half.
UC Davis, which was coming off an impressive 60-51 win the night before over a good Denver squad, received 12 points and seven rebounds from Samantha Meggison. The Aggies dropped to 7-4 with the loss.
