Charles Odum scored 25 points to lead the Vikings to a 79-69 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in their final game at the Wyoming Jim Thorpe Classic.
Portland State went 2-1 in the tournament and is now 4-2 on the season.
Odum hit 7-14 from the field and 9-11 at the line, adding six rebounds and three assists. He was one of four Vikings in double figures.
For the first time in three games at the Jim Thorpe Classic, the Vikings got off to a strong offensive start. A three-pointer by
Michael Harthun gave the Vikings a 20-8 lead midway through the first half.
The Vikings rolled into halftime with a 34-21 lead behind a combined 18 points from Odum and
Michael Harthun (7-14 FGs, 4-7 3-pt FGs). PSU had a 26-19 rebounding advantage and held the Hawks to 28% shooting.
A Harthun jumper with 11:46 left in the game gave the Vikings their largest lead at 52-37. But the Hawks came back, closing the margin to 64-60 on a three-point play by Percy Woods with 4:29 to play.
Nate Lozeau answered back with a layup and a short jumper on PSU's next two possessions, making it 68-60 at the 3:22 mark.
Despite two late three-point field goals by the Hawks, the Vikings went 11-14 at the free throw line over the last 2:19 to hang on for the win.
Tapscott had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Vikings. Harthun added a season-high 15 points, hitting 6-9 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range. Lozeau added his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Ishaq Pitts scored 16 points to lead Maryland-Eastern Shore, now 1-7.
GAME NOTES: Odum scored 52 points in the Vikings two wins on Saturday (27 vs. Louisiana Tech) and Sunday. He made 16-28 from the field and 18-20 at the line in the two games. His previous career-high had been 24 points. He is a likely candidate for All-Tournament honors, which will be announced later on Sunday night… PSU has started 4-2 for the second year in a row... Portland State is now 3-0 all-time against Maryland-Eastern Shore and 8-1 against members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference… the Vikings return home to host Walla Walla University on Saturday at the Stott Center.
