PSU-OREGON SERIES NOTES: Oregon leads the all-time series 22-6, including 9-1 in Eugene. The Ducks have won 10 in a row in the series since PSU's last win on Jan, 30, 1985. Despite being located about two hours apart, Portland State and Oregon have only played four times since the Vikings made the jump back up to the NCAA DI level in 1996-97. And they only played once the previous decade, with Oregon winning 87-58, in Eugene on Nov. 29, 2009. Only three Vikings are left from that team:
Stephanie Egwuatu,
Eryn Jones and
Karley Lampman. Egwuatu played one of the best games of her career, scoring eight points and pulling down five boards in 17 minutes of play. The eight points remained her career high until she scored nine at Wyoming on March 16, 2011. Jones scored five points in 13 minutes, and Lampman played one minute.
PORTLAND STATE vs. OREGON STORYLINES
• The Vikings and Ducks will meet up for the second time in three seasons, after not playing for almost 10 years. Prior to playing in Eugene on Nov. 29, 2009, the last time they faced off was Dec. 18, 1999, also in Eugene.
• Oregon won easily the last time these two played, claiming a 87-58 victory at Mac Court in the World Vision Invitational. PSU shot a season-low 25.4 percent from the floor, the only time they were held below 30 percent all year.
• The Ducks have won 10 straight and 22 of 23 in the series. Five of the Vikings' six wins in the series came in the 70s.
• Portland State's lone win in Eugene was a 75-74 overtime victory on Jan. 30, 1985.
• PSU Head Coach
Sherri Murrell is 1-7 against Pac-12 schools in her four years on the Park Blocks. She is also 0-6 on the road. The lone win came in the 2009-10 season opener against Washington, 67-66. Last year, PSU had a chance to knock the Huskies off in Seattle, but came up just short, losing 51-50.
• Oregon is the lone Pac-12 school the Vikings will face this year. That is the fewest since Murrell's first year (2007-08). In '08-09, PSU played two games against Pac-12 teams (both against OSU), then three the next year and two last season.
• Oregon's third-year head coach, Paul Westhead, is 5-0 against Big Sky schools, including 4-0 at home.
• Portland State Associate Head Coach Peg Swadener played for the Ducks in the early 90s and was named to the Academic All-Pac-10 team three times. She also was an assistant at Oregon from 2003-06.

WHAT A WEEK FOR JONES!: What a week it has been for PSU senior point guard
Eryn Jones. On Friday, Jones poured in a career-high 24 points in helping the Vikings rally to win their season opener, 80-76, against UC Irvine. On Sunday, she scored 15 points in PSU's 65-51 win over UC Santa Barbara, and in the process became the 15th member of the 1,000-point club at PSU. Then yesterday, Jones was named the first Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for her performance over the Vikings' first two games. Jones averaged 19.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.5 apg, while shooting 41.9% (13-31) from the floor, including 43.8% (7-16) from behind the arc. It was the third career POTW award for Jones.
JONES PASSES 1,000 POINTS: As noted above,
Eryn Jones became the 15th member of the 1,000-point club at Portland State on Sunday, Nov. 13, in PSU's 65-51 win over UC Santa Barbara. She entered the year needing 35 points and scored 39 over the first two games. A PSU player has now gone over the 1,000-point mark in three straight years and in four of the past five. In 2006-07, Kelsey Kahle did it just as a sophomore. In 2009-10, senior Claire Faucher joined the elite club. And last season,
Kelli Valentine became the 14th member in her final year as a Viking.
VIKINGS RANKED IN MID-MAJOR TOP 25: Portland State is ranked 25th in the second CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll of the year. The Vikings were just outside of the top 25 last week, receiving votes. They are one of just three West Coast schools ranked, joining Gonzaga (2) and UC Davis (21). PSU plays both of those teams this year, taking on Gonzaga in Spokane on Nov. 27, and UC Davis in Hawai`i on Dec. 20. While the Vikings are in the Aloha State, they will also face Denver, who received votes in this week's poll.
ROAD OPENERS: The Vikings are 2-2 in road openers under
Sherri Murrell. They won their first road games of the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, over Portland (80-71) and Binghamton (62-52), respectively. But they've lost their last two, getting defeated 92-80 at Boise State two years ago and 51-50 at Washington last season.
2-0, AGAIN: For the fourth time in five seasons, Portland State has started 2-0 with
Sherri Murrell as head coach. The Vikings got off to 2-0 starts in each of Murrell's first three seasons, but started 1-1 a year ago. PSU's best start under Murrell is 5-0, which came in her first season, 2007-08.
HIGH-SCORING OPENER: The Vikings' 80 points in their win over UC Irvine was their most in a season opener since defeating Texas A&M, 80-78 in overtime, on Nov. 17, 2001. It was also their most in a non-overtime opener since defeating Pittsburgh Johnstown, 84-62, on Nov. 19, 1994.
WHERE WERE ALL OF THE FREE THROWS?: Portland State (3-7) and UC Santa Barbara (4-7) combined to make just seven free throws on Sunday, the lowest in a PSU game in almost 15 years. On Dec. 18, 1996, PSU (2-2) and UC Irvine (4-7) combined to make just six in a 41-39 Anteaters' victory. The seven free throws would have been even crazier if it would have occurred on Friday, when PSU played UC Irvine at the Stott Center.
FINDING HER STROKE: Junior guard
Karley Lampman has found her stroke to start the 2011-12 season, shooting 47.6% from the floor to rank 12th in the Big Sky, and 80% from 3-point range to rank second. Coming into this year, Lampman had just a 27.8% career shooting percentage, including a 20.4% mark from behind the arc. She has been a major contributor in both of PSU's victories, scoring a career-high 15 against UC Irvine and adding 12 vs. UCSB. She is tied for ninth in the league in scoring (13.5 ppg) and also third in steals (3.0 spg).
MURRELL MAKING HER MARK: In just four short seasons at the helm of the PSU women's hoops squad,
Sherri Murrell has undoubtedly made her team a force to be reckoned with in the Big Sky. Her 83-46 overall record and 46-18 Big Sky record is second only to Montana's Robin Selvig (86-41, 48-16). She has led PSU to three straight Big Sky tournament championship game appearances after a semifinal appearance in her first year. In just four seasons, she already ranks second all-time in wins at PSU and has led the Vikings to their only 20-win seasons at the DI level (2007-08, 2008-09 and 2010-11). The 83 wins over the past four years are more than they had in the previous eight seasons combined (70), while their 46 Big Sky victories the past four seasons are also more than the previous eight years combined (41). From 1999-2000 to 2006-07 (the year before
Sherri Murrell took over), the Vikings were 70-154 overall and 41-77 in the Big Sky. Murrell is the fastest coach in Portland State basketball history, men's or women's, to reach the 50-win plateau, doing so in 75 games. The next in line is ex-men's coach Ken Bone, who recorded win No. 50 at PSU in 88 games.
