Viking Football Names Team Captains

The Portland State Football team has selected its team captains for the 2010 season. Six Vikings will serve as captains, including four Oregonians.

In voting done by Viking players, seniors Drew Hubel and Travis Beckley, and juniors Connor Kavanaugh, Ryan Rau, DeShawn Shead and Adam Kleffner were all selected as captains. Originally, Head Coach Nigel Burton had wanted to name four captains, but the voting was so close among those six players he decided to go with all six.

Hubel and Kavanaugh are both quarterbacks, and both competing to start this weekend at Arizona State. Kavanaugh is from Portland's Lincoln High School, while Hubel is from Corvallis (OR) High School. Kleffner, from Portland's Jesuit High School, is expected to start at center. Beckley, from Eugene's Thurston High School, should start at defensive tackle.

Rau, from Folsom, CA, will start at middle linebacker, and Shead, from Palmdale, CA, will start at cornerback.

Beckley and Shead have the distinction of having started 22 straight games for the Vikings. Beckley has played the most career games (33). Hubel has played in 24 games while starting the most among offensive players (20).

Portland State opens the season this Saturday at Arizona State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
