Vikings Split Friday Doubleheader with Bears

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State softball team split its series-opening doubleheader with Northern Colorado on Friday, run-ruling the Bears 10-2 in the opener before falling 8-0 in the nightcap at Hillsboro Ballpark.

The Vikings (13-27, 3-8 BSC) tallied 10 hits in game one but managed just one in the game two loss. Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung led Portland State to victory with a complete game in the circle, holding the Bears (20-23, 6-5 BSC) to just three hits and one earned run in the opener.

The Vikings struck first on Friday, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Three of those runs came on a two-out, bases-loaded double by Mia Martinez that cleared the bases and gave Portland State a 3-0 lead. Rylee Gaustad followed with an infield single to score Martinez and extend the lead to 4-0.

The Bears added a run in the top of the second, taking advantage of a Viking error to make it 4-1. Portland State responded in the third, using an RBI from Martinez and a Bears error, before a two-out single from Sierra Llamas scored Gaustad to make it 7-1. Northern Colorado used a leadoff single in the fourth to cut into the deficit, but the Vikings answered once more, extending their lead to 10-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Nichole Orozco started the rally with a ground-rule double that scored Nakoa-Chung. The Vikings later added runs on a UNC error and Gaustad's second RBI of the game.

Nakoa-Chung and the Vikings' defense closed it out in the fifth to secure the 10-2 run-rule win. She finished with three strikeouts in the complete-game effort, improving to 8-9 on the year. Gaustad led Portland State with a career-high three hits, while Martinez recorded a career-best five RBI.

Game two was a different story, as the Vikings managed just one hit, a fourth-inning single from Grace Johnson. Meanwhile, the Bears capitalized on seven walks and five hit-by-pitches to score eight runs, seven earned, and even the series with an 8-0 run-rule win.

Portland State will have a chance to secure its first Big Sky series win of the season in Saturday's finale, set for 1:00 p.m. at Hillsboro Ballpark. The Vikings will honor their five seniors following the game.
