HILLSBORO, Ore. – Portland State softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Weber State on Friday at Hillsboro Ballpark, falling 3-2 in eight innings in the opener before a late rally came up short in a 6-5 loss in game two.
With the losses, the Vikings moved to 11-26 overall and 1-7 in Big Sky play, while Weber State improved to 13-31 (4-4 Big Sky).
The Vikings struck first in the opener, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Grace Johnson reached and came around to score on an RBI single from Breanna Lutz, while Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung later drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0.
That lead held until the fourth when Weber State evened the score on a two-run home run. From there, both pitchers settled in, sending the game to extra innings tied at 2-2.
The Wildcats broke through in the eighth, scoring the go-ahead run, and Portland State couldn't respond in the bottom half.
Despite the loss, Nakoa-Chung was strong in the circle for PSU, going all eight innings while allowing three runs on seven hits. Accounting for half of the Vikings' total hits in game one, Lutz led the Vikings offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Vikings again jumped out early in game two, as Johnson reached to open the first and Lutz followed with a two-run home run to give Portland State a 2-0 lead. Weber State chipped away with a run in the fourth before taking control in the fifth, scoring four runs—two of which were unearned—to flip the game in its favor. The Wildcats added another run in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2.
Portland State responded in the bottom of the sixth, pulling within one. Abigail Carsley highlighted the inning with a three-run home run after a pair of WIldcats errors put Nichole Orozco and Mia Martinez on base.
The VIkings were unable to bring a run across in their final at-bat of the day, dropping game two 6-5.
Gracie Walters went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits. Five Vikings tallied a hit in the loss.
Portland State and Weber State will wrap up the series Saturday at Hillsboro Ballpark.
