BOISE, Idaho – The Portland State softball team split day two of the Blue Collar Classic, falling 5-3 to St. Thomas before bouncing back with a 4-1 win over Boise State at Dona Larsen Park.
The Vikings (8-11) picked up their first victory over the Broncos (10-14) since 2015, snapping Boise State's 10-game win streak in the process.
In game one, Portland State fell behind 5-0 after surrendering one run in the first and four in the third to the Tommies (16-6). The Vikings capitalized on a walk and back-to-back St. Thomas errors to load the bases in the sixth, leading to an RBI fielder's choice from Alison Harris and an RBI infield single by Gracie Toney to cut the deficit to 5-2.
PSU loaded the bases again in the seventh and pulled within two on a one-out RBI single from Jolee Benson. The Tommies, however, recorded the final two outs to hold on for the win.
The Vikings totaled 11 hits in the loss, highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance from Nichole Orozco.
Looking to end a 10-game skid against the Broncos, Portland State came out aggressive in game two. Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung, who tossed a complete game in the circle, opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run to right-center. Later in the inning, Abigail Carsley followed with her first career home run as a Viking to make it 2-0.
The Vikings added to their lead in the third on RBIs from Orozco and Benson, extending the advantage to 4-0. Boise State got one back on a solo home run in the sixth, but Nakoa-Chung and the Viking defense shut the door from there. Nakoa-Chung (4-3) earned her second complete-game victory of the weekend, striking out four and limiting the Broncos to seven hits. Portland State finished with six hits in the win, with five different Vikings recording at least one. Grace Johnson led the way with two.
The Vikings close out the weekend Saturday with a rematch against St. Thomas at 11:30 a.m. PT / 12:30 p.m. MT at Dona Larsen Park.
