TEMPE, Ariz. – Portland State softball split its second day of the Littlewood Invitational at Farrington Softball Stadium, falling to Nevada 6-1 before bouncing back with 7-2 win over Pacific in the nightcap.
The Vikings' game two victory over the Tigers (1-6) was powered by a complete-game, four-hit performance from Gracie Walters in the circle. Earlier in the day, PSU (3-6) kept Nevada (3-2) within reach, but the Wolf Pack was relentless at the plate, scoring in four of their six at-bats.
Facing Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung in the circle, Nevada pushed across runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Nichole Orozco trimmed the deficit to one in the top of the third, scoring Mia Martinez to make it 2-1. The Wolf Pack answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom half, and the Vikings couldn't close the gap from there as Nevada secured a 6-1 win.
In search of their third win of the year, the Vikings came out hot in game two. A Tiger error and back-to-back RBI from Nakoa-Chung and Jolee Benson put Portland State ahead 3-0 in the opening frame. Pacific answered with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning, but that was its last offensive spark of the day. Walters took control from there, limiting the Tigers to just three hits the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, the Vikings' offense kept producing, plating runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Martinez made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly in the second before Grace Johnson used her speed in the third to beat out an infield single that brought Benson home for a 5-2 edge. A sacrifice fly from Benson and an RBI single by Gracie Toney in the fourth extended the lead to 7-2, where it held for the remainder of the contest.
Capping off her third complete-game performance of the season, Walters retired the Tigers in order in their final at-bat to secure the win for Portland State. She finished with three strikeouts and just one walk.
The Vikings knocked 10 hits in the victory, with two apiece from Nakoa-Chung, Benson and Breanna Lutz. The season-high came after Portland State managed just three hits in the opener against Nevada — two from Martinez and one from Rylee Gaustad.
Portland State closes out its trip to Tempe with a single game Saturday, Feb. 14, against No. 22 Arizona State at Farrington Softball Stadium (11:45 a.m. PT).
