GREELEY, Colo. – The Portland State softball team's season came to an end Thursday evening at the Big Sky Tournament, falling to second-seeded Sacramento State, 15-4, in an elimination game at Gloria Rodriguez Field.
With the run-rule win, the Hornets advanced in the tournament and improved to 27-22 on the year, while the Vikings closed out their 2025 campaign with a 12-39 record.
Sacramento State came out hot, jumping to a 6-0 lead behind a three-run homer in the first inning and three more runs in the second.
Alapese Matautia responded for the Vikings in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 6-2 to shift the momentum in PSU's favor. Â
The Hornets, however, pulled away in the later innings—adding three runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to extend their lead to 15-2.
With their season on the line, the Vikings showed fight in the bottom of the fifth as
Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung delivered a two-RBI double to score Matautia and
Neveah Smith. But Sacramento State shut the door shortly after, forcing a pop-up and a strikeout to end the game via the mercy rule.
The Hornets tallied 14 hits to the Vikings' four. Nakoa-Chung led the way with two hits, while Matautia and Smith added one apiece.
Portland State finished the week 0-2 at the tournament, marking its first winless appearance since 2016 and ending a four-year streak of top-three finishes—a stretch that included a runner-up finish in 2024.
