Vikings Drop Regular Season Finale to Eagles

CHENEY, Wash. — The Portland State women's tennis team fell to Eastern Washington, 5-2, at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse on Sunday, closing out their regular season schedule.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in Big Sky play. Eastern Washington, with two regular season matches remaining, improved to 4-12 overall and 2-4 in conference action.

Once again playing a woman down, the Vikings were forced to forfeit a doubles match and a singles match. Needing just one win in doubles to secure the point, Eastern Washington claimed a 6-1 victory at line two, while the match at No. 1 went unfinished, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles extended their lead with a forfeit win in singles, followed by a straight-set victory at No. 2. Viking freshman Kaumi Hirayama earned the first point of the day for Portland State at the No. 4 spot, defeating Zoe Pradel, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Eastern clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win on court three.

Despite the outcome, Nika Beukers capped off the day with an impressive three-set comeback at the top spot, rallying past Isabella Foshee, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Eastern wrapped up the match with a final win at No. 5.

While the Vikings' hopes for a Big Sky tournament berth remain alive, the final standings have yet to be determined with several conference matches still to be played. The Big Sky Championship will take place April 24–26 at the Phoenix Tennis Center and will feature the top six teams from the regular season.
