MOSCOW, Idaho -Â The Portland State women's tennis team pushed a pair of matches to third sets on Sunday afternoon but couldn't overcome Idaho, suffering their first Big Sky loss of the season in a 7-0 defeat at the Kibbie Dome.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Vandals extended their winning streak to eight matches, improving to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Sky action.
Idaho took an early lead with a sweep in doubles play before securing the dual with six wins in singles action. Four of those victories came in straight sets, but Nika Beukers and Kasumi Hirayama pushed their opponents to a third set after dropping their openers. Beukers, looking to remain unbeaten in conference play, battled Diana Khaydarshina at the top spot before falling 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (7). Hirayama had a similar result at line five, ultimately coming up short against Valentina Rodas, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (7).
The Vikings will look to bounce back next weekend as they continue Big Sky play on the road against Montana State on Friday, March 14, and Montana on Sunday, March 16.
