OGDEN, Utah – The Portland State softball team was unable to carry its momentum into game three of its conference-opening series against Weber State, falling 4-0 in the deciding game on Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field.
With the loss, the Vikings dropped to 6-28 overall and finished their opening Big Sky weekend with a 1-2 conference record. The Wildcats improved to 13-23 overall, with a 2-1 mark in conference play.
As they did in Game one on Friday, the Wildcats struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Two innings later, a solo shot extended their lead to three before they added another run on a fielder's choice RBI in the fifth.
Meanwhile, the Vikings were consistent offensively, recording at least one hit in five of their at-bats but struggled to string them together, leaving six runners stranded throughout the game. Despite the final score, the Wildcats held just a one-hit advantage over Portland State, recording seven hits compared to the Vikings' six.Â
Gracie Walters did the majority of the pitching for PSU, taking things over in the second inning, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work.
The Vikings will have a quick turnaround, returning to action on Tuesday with a break from conference play. They'll host Western Oregon for a mid-week doubleheader at Hillsboro Stadium, starting at 2:00 p.m., before welcoming Sacramento State for a three-game home series on Friday and Saturday.
