SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Portland State softball team wrapped up play at the Golden Coast Classic on Sunday, falling 8-4 to Columbia at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium.
The Vikings ended the weekend 0-5, bringing their overall record to 4-23. The Lions improved to 6-8 with the win.
Columbia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on four hits and a Portland State error. However, the Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning when Alison Harris launched her first career home run, a three-run shot, to cut the deficit to 4-3. That's where the score remained until the top of the sixth, when the Lions extended their lead with another big inning, scoring four runs on four hits and another Viking error to go up 8-3.
Portland State showed some fight in the bottom of the sixth, as Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung led off with a walk, followed by an RBI double from Ellie Babbitt to make it 8-4. The Vikings held the Lions scoreless in their final at-bat but were unable to mount a comeback in their last turn at the plate, ultimately falling 8-4.
The Vikings recorded seven hits in the game, with Grace Johnson leading the charge, going 3-for-4. Johnson finished the weekend with a team-best .625 batting average (10-for-16) across five games.
Grace Kimball started in the circle for the Vikings, but Annie Lemos did the bulk of the work, tossing four innings, giving up just one earned run, and striking out two.
The Vikings will return home for a four-game non-conference homestand before opening Big Sky play. They'll host Rutgers this Wednesday, March 19, at 3:00 p.m., followed by a three-game series against Pacific (CA) next weekend, March 22-23.
