EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State softball team dropped both games on Saturday at the Oregon Classic, falling 13-3 to San Diego in game one before a narrow 3-2 loss to Loyola Chicago in game two at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Vikings fell to 4-15 on the season, while San Diego improved to 8-12 and Loyola Chicago moved to 3-13.
Portland State's offense showed flashes, totaling 14 hits across the two games—its second-highest mark in a doubleheader this season.
In game one, after the Toreros jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning, the Vikings responded immediately. Ellie Babbitt's squeeze bunt brought home Nevaeh Smith, and Natalia Martinez followed with an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at 2-2. However, San Diego broke things open with three runs in both the second and third innings, building an 8-2 lead.
Delaney Hoyle plated Elise Sanchez with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, recording her first career RBI, but the Toreros tacked on two more in the fourth and ended the game via run rule with a three-run sixth.
The Vikings tallied eight hits in the loss, with Babbitt leading the way at 2-for-3. Six others recorded a hit.
In game two, Portland State put together a solid all-around performance but came up just short. Grace Kimball threw her fourth complete game of the season, holding the Ramblers to four hits and two earned runs.
Loyola took a 1-0 lead in the first, a score that held until the fifth when the Vikings broke through. Smith and Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung delivered RBI to put PSU ahead 2-1.
The Ramblers answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out, two-run single through the left side to reclaim the lead. Portland State was held hitless the rest of the way as Loyola secured the win.
Smith led the Vikings offensively in game two with two hits, while four others contributed to the team's six-hit total.
Portland State wraps up the Oregon Classic on Sunday, March 2, with a 10:30 a.m. matchup against San Diego at Jane Sanders Stadium.
