Vikings Fall to UC San Diego, Defeat Winthrop on Final Day of La Jolla Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Portland State softball team wrapped up opening weekend Sunday, splitting its final two games at the La Jolla Invitational. The Vikings fell to UC San Diego 5-2 before closing out the weekend with a 10-8 win over Winthrop.

The Vikings return to Portland with a 2-3 record. The Tritons finished the weekend 1-3, Winthrop went 2-2, and BYU, though not part of today's action, finished the tournament 3-0.

PSU found itself trailing early in Sunday's opening game, allowing two runs in the opening three innings against UC San Diego. However, Natalia Martinez sparked a comeback in the top of the fifth, tying the game with a clutch single that scored Scarlett McEwen and Neveah Smith.

The Tritons quickly regained the lead with a run in the fifth and added another in the sixth. PSU couldn't find a rally in its final at-bat, falling 5-2.

Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung started game one for the Vikings, striking out four and limiting the Tritons to just three hits before Anna Jardin took over in the sixth inning. Offensively, PSU recorded seven hits, with Smith and Martinez each going 2-for-3 to lead the way.

The Vikings built on their hitting performance from game one, racking up a weekend-high ten hits in the weekend finale victory over Winthrop. Lorraine Alo got things started in the first inning, slamming an RBI single that drove in Grace Johnson. Yet, Winthrop responded, scoring two runs in the top of the second to take a brief lead. Portland State then broke things open with a four-run third inning, with RBIs from Martinez, Ellie Babbitt and Alison Harris. An inning later, Babbitt struck again, adding a two-RBI double in the fourth, extending the lead to 7-2.

Winthrop fought back once again, tying the game at seven with a big fifth inning. The back-and-forth continued as Smith and Alo drove in three runs in the bottom of the fifth, putting the Vikings ahead 10-7. The Eagles chipped away, making it 10-8 in the sixth, but Grace Kimball shut them down in the seventh, securing the win for the Vikings.

Annie Lemos earned the win in her first start of the season, pitching five innings, striking out three, and allowing just five hits. Kimball closed out the game, marking her third appearance of the weekend.

Babbitt led the Vikings with a career-high four RBI, finishing 2-for-3 in the win. Alo closely followed with two hits and three RBI. Smith contributed two hits in the finale, capping off a standout weekend where she went 7-for-12 (.583), leading the Vikings offensively.

PSU will return to action next weekend with another five-game slate in California, beginning with a doubleheader against UC Riverside and UC Davis at the Cardinal Classic in Stanford on Friday, Feb. 14.
