OPENING TIP
Portland State will go after a 14th-straight home win on Wednesday night when it hosts Evergreen State at Viking Pavilion. It will be Portland State's 100th game at Viking Pavilion since the facility opened for the 2018-19 season. PSU is 69-30 there all-time, 26-3 over the past three seasons, and have sailed The Ship to 13 consecutive wins more recently.

PSU comes off a 93-80 home win over Cal State Bakersfield on Monday for two in a row at home this season and has not lost a game on the Park Blocks since Dec. 7 of last year.

The Vikings (2-2) will once again be a heavy favorite over the lower division Geoducks from Olympia, WA. PSU has won all six meetings, including a 131-84 decision last year. PSU has a perfect 11-0 mark against lower division opponents in five seasons under Head Coach Jase Coburn.

If the Vikings get the same production from their "big three" preseason All-Conference selections that they had against Bakersfield, Wednesday's contest should be a smooth ride. SR G Jaylin Henderson went for 28 points, five assists and two steals against the Roadrunners. SR F Terri Miller Jr. added 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, and SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott matched his career high for the second time this season with 16 points. That trio shot a remarkable 24-36 from the field (.667) to lead the team to a 33-55 performance overall (.600). The Vikings were also 10-18 from behind the three-point line (.556).

Through four games, Portland State has proven to be an offensive force, averaging 91.0 points while shooting .521 from the field and .404 from three-point range. The only drawback has been a plethora of fouls, allowing opponents to shoot 12 more free throws per game (while making 10 more per game).

Hopefully, the offensive performance against Bakersfield will allow the Vikings to create momentum through the non-conference schedule. Beginning Wednesday, three of the next five games are at The Ship. And we all know what the Vikings do when they play there....

COMING UP
Portland State is off until next Tuesday when it travels to face Utah Tech in St. George. The Vikings won last year's matchup, 71-68, at Viking Pavilion. PSU then plays Dec. 3 at South Dakota. The next home game is Dec. 6 against Omaha. Those two games are part of the Big Sky Conference-Summit League Challenge.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. EVERGREEN STATE
  • ALL-TIME SERIES: Portland State leads the all-time series, 6-0... all six games have been played at PSU, including three of the past four seasons. The Vikings won, 131-84, last year.
  • LAST SEASON: Nov. 7, 2024 at Viking Pavilion, PSU 131, ESC 84: Less basketball game and more of a track meet, Portland State came away with an easy 47-point victory... PSU's 131 points were the most scored in the Big Sky Conference era (1996 to present)... The Vikings had 35 assists, just short of the school record of 38, and PSU shot .684 from the field (52-76), coming up just shy of the school mark of .688 against Eastern Washington back in 2009. Qiant Myers handed out 14 assists... Ismail Habib led all scorers with 29 points, including 9-11 three-point field goals, in only 22 minutes of action. Habib was one of eight Vikings to score in double figures. Hayden Curtiss tallied 17 points on 7-8 shooting with six rebounds... Jourdan Joseph led the Geoducks with 23 points. Tyler No added 17.
  • PORTLAND STATE vs. LOWER DIVISION SCHOOLS: Portland State is 63-2 against lower division schools in 30 seasons as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I (1996-2026). Head Coach Jase Coburn is a perfect 11-0 against such schools... Portland State has lost only 16 non-conference home games in the last 16 seasons (74-16). PSU is 33-15 against Division I schools, and 41-1 against lower division schools over that span.
  • COACHES: Vikings Coach Jase Coburn (Arizona State, 2006) is in his fifth season as Head Coach. He spent eight previous seasons on the Park Blocks as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach. Coburn's overall record is 64-66. He is 3-0 against Evergreen State... the Geoducks are coached Cameron Swanson in his third season. Swanson is 6-48, including 0-1 vs. the Vikings.

SCOUTING THE GEODUCKS
  • Evergreen State College is located in Olympia, WA and is a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Geoducks were 2-23 last season, 2-20 and 12th place in the CCC... a Geoduck is the world's largest burrowing clam. Indigenous to the Puget Sound, a geoduck weighs in at over two pounds on average. It's pronounced like gooey-duck.
  • This season, the Geoducks are 0-2. They average 74.0 points and allow 83.5 points per game... ESC shoots .455 from the field, .396 from three-point range and .773 at the line.
  • Senior forward Tony Frohlich-Fair averages 25.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to lead the team... sophomore guard Kenzel Massey averages 10.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.

HOT SHOTS
  • WICHITA LINEMAN: Wichita, KS native SR G Jaylin Henderson has been red-hot to start season with the best line going for the Vikings. Henderson leads PSU in scoring (21.3), steals (11) assists (18) and is shooting .483 from the field, .368 from three-point range and .800 at the line... Henderson posted a season-high 28 points (10-17 FG, 1-3 3-pt, 7-7 FT) with five assists, two steals and two rebounds in the win over CSU Bakersfield... Henderson currently leads the Big Sky Conference in scoring and steals.
  • JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: SR F Terri Miller Jr. scored a season-high 20 points (7-9 FG, 3-4 3-pt, 3-3 FT) with an excellent shooting line against CSUB. He added five rebounds and five assists... Miller averages 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists this season... he ranks fourth in the Big Sky in assists.
  • RERUNS ON TV: SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott had a rerun performance in the win over Bakersfield. He scored 16 points (7-10 FG, 2-4 FT) to match the 16 he scored last game at San Francisco, which matched his career high set last year against both Idaho and Eastern Washington... Minott is shooting .677 from the field this season while averaging 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
  • MORE GOOD STUFF THAT DOESN'T FIT ANYWHERE ELSE: The Vikings now have two games in which they have shot at least 60%: vs. Northwest Indian (.617) and Cal State Bakersfield (.600). The Vikings shoot .521 for the season... JR F Sebastian Tidor leads in bench scoring with 12.5 points per game, and he has made a team-high 11-27 three-pointers (.407).

NOT SO HOT
  • INFRACTIONS AND OBSTRUCTIONS: Portland State has played well but also made a number of mistakes in the first four games. The Vikings are averaging 26.0 fouls and 15.8 turnovers... last season the Vikings averaged 17.5 fouls and 12.7 turnovers per game... opponents have shot 12 more free throws per game than the Vikings, making 10 more.

SHIP SHAPE
  • PSU has a 13-game home court winning streak at Viking Pavilion.
  • PSU is 26-3 at home since the start of the 2023-24 season.
  • The Vikings have won 12 straight Big Sky Conference home games dating back to the 2023-24 season.
  • In two home games this season, PSU has trailed for only 27 seconds with one wire-to-wire win.
  • With a 13-1 home record last season, Portland State trailed in only five of the 14 games, winning wire-to-wire in nine games. In a total of 560 minutes played in Viking Pavilion, the Vikings trailed for only 67 minutes and 59 seconds. And the Vikings' lone home loss came by a single point.
  • Portland State's Feb. 19 game with Idaho has been added to the ESPNU schedule. It will be televised nationally with a 6 p.m. tip time. PSU games have been live streamed on ESPN+ in past seasons, but this will be the first nationally-televised basketball game at Viking Pavilion since it opened in 2018. PSU basketball has had one previous home game televised on ESPNU – a Feb. 21, 2009 contest with Boise State (and 93-81 Viking win). That game aired from the old Stott Center gymnasium.

STUFF STUFF
  • DUNK-O-METER: The Vikings have 26 dunks through four games this season. That is on pace for 189 on the season, which would obliterate the school record of 123 dunks, set last season.
  • SEASON HIGH: PSU had a season-high 11 dunks against Northwest Indian (11/7). The school record for the team in a game is 13.
  • SEASON HIGH, PART TWO: SR G Jaylin Henderson had five dunks against Northwest Indian (11/7) to tie a school record set by teammate SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott last season in a game against Idaho. Minott tied it again with five dunks against San Francisco (11/2).
  • A SLAMTASTIC SEASON: Last year, Portland State set a school record with 123 dunks as a team... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott set an individual record with 44 dunks.
