EUGENE, Ore. — Laura Beghin may be from Wisconsin, but the way she runs in the rain, you'd be forgiven if you thought she was a native of the Pacific Northwest. In two 1,500-meter races amid wet conditions at Hayward Field this season, Beghin has set a personal best each time. Friday's latest came at the Oregon Twilight where Beghin finished 10th in her heat in 4:32.98.
Â
The personal best came despite a water-logged track, which was ironically the same conditions she faced when setting the mark she bettered Friday at the Oregon Preview on March 23. It was a wet track and rainy conditions for that meet, too, and Beghin showed no signs of struggle while finishing in 4:33.94 earlier in the season.
Â
Friday's personal best of 4:32.98 marked the third time Beghin's rewritten her 1,500-meter PR this season. That should come as no surprise, though, as all seven of Beghin's personal bests have come during the 2024 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Â
The strong showing gives a dose of encouragement for Beghin a week ahead of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 8-11, in Bozeman, Mont. Another encouraging sign will come if Beghin can handle the quick turnaround she's scheduled to face this weekend. After running the 1,500 meters Friday, Beghin is entered in the 800 meters at the Portland Twilight Saturday, where she'll compete along with 14 of her Viking teammates. Perform well there, and the Portland State coaches will know that Beghin can handle the quick turnaround between a prelim and final like she could face at the Big Sky meet.
Â
But of course, if a Wisconsinite like Beghin can run in the rain as well as someone from the Pacific Northwest, then a 24-hour turnaround has to be a cakewalk.
